I was nervous to start HoEaB when I got it but now it may be a new favourite. I even appreciated the lack of explicit smut, but I do hope there is some in HoSaB. I related to Bryce on an unnatural level, I understood her pain, her grief and her struggle to keep fighting. Thank god I have HoSaB to start now!

It took me a little bit to acclimate to this book, but it was very interesting. I'm super excited to see where the rest of the series goes.

Likes:

Mixture of traditional supernatural elements and modern technology. That was cool. Futuristic!
The grief and mental illness rep
Bryce was likable and realistic. Loved her relationship with her brother and best friend. Loved that she fights for those she loves and never gave up.

Dislikes:

Info dumping— Most of it didn’t seem to make sense. It was unnecessary. Majority of the book was info dumping. I wanna say the last two hundred pages were the only essential ones and even those had some info dumping here and there lol make a damn glossary please SJM.
Not enough fantastical elements for me. Seemed to me a Knives Out book but with fantastical characters. It was definitely a whodunit situation which I kinda liked but could’ve executed better if the characters used their powers more often. We mainly got Hunt and very little of anyone else’s powers till the end. Wanted more from the side characters. Hoping the sequel will give them more exposure.

Concept is 5 stars, characters are 4 stars, execution is 2 stars. Someone should have edited the first 500 pages down to around half that for all they hold - if the first half had been anything like the last, it would’ve been at least a 4.5 star read. Also…why was the word “fuck” mentioned ten times per page? People don’t talk like that in real life
