Between 3 and 4 stars for me. I enjoyed this, especially the last third. I found it took me a while to get oriented. I am all for having books subvert our expectations, but for some reason I was less interested in how it was done here (focusing on the face of the oppressive regime and what happens after that regime falls). As Parul Sehgal has said, instead of saying I don’t like something, I’m curious WHY I don’t like something. In this case, I wonder if I am so used to traditional protagonists, that this new perspective was just a little less interesting to me?

i can appreciate the overall idea, as i think it’s very cool to focus on the aftermath of a dystopian revolution through the eyes of someone who was on the side of The Big Bad Government that was overthrown, but i was still left feeling unsatisfied. there should’ve been something more. it could’ve been great, but it was missing something crucial.

I honestly didn’t go into this with any expectations. Dystopian fiction isn’t a favorite genre, but I figured since I had it I might as well give it a shot. I ended up pleasantly surprised. I like the way Veronica Roth writes about characters in the aftermath of a major event not in the thick of it. It was a quick read that wasn’t overly complex but had enough to keep things interesting.

I don’t think I like dystopian. It was too slow and world building wasn’t there.

It was really nice to read a dystopia again, especially one written by Roth. The only thing I didn't enjoy was
Spoiler the romance between Sonya and the MMC. It felt fake and I couldn't sense any chemistry what so ever.

I really really liked this one. It’s a post-dystopian (what happens after the uprising) that really made me nostalgic for the YA dystopian books I read Back in the day. Really provoked a lot of thought and had great character work. I was Really really impressed by this one and it put Veronica Roth back on my map.
