A nearly perfect book. This one has perfect plotting. An incredible premise And a cast of characters that is interesting and complicated. Truly horrific!!

this book is very very good at gory body horror and gruesome suspense. there are a lot of simile tangents ("it was like the state fair, where he had gone as a boy...etc etc" for a page) but I thought it did a good job of characterizing the boys. the mixed in bits from the aftermath provided a good balance of solid outline with the experiences on the island. overall I felt tense and nauseous for most of the time I read this, which I'd say is the mark of a good gross-out horror novel.

I get why people like the vibe but couldn't fully immerse myself due to multiple animal cruelty scenes that go on for far too long

There isn’t anything this book does that the Lord of The Flies hasn’t already done better. At some point, it just becomes torture porn involving children
So many times I found myself asking “Why?”
“Why do I need to know so much about what this minor’s penis is doing, Nick Cutter?”
“Why do we need to know if we can see this minor’s ass crack, Nick Cutter?”
I love horror, I love thrillers, I love gore, but the horror and thrills and gore in this book were senseless, regardless of how well it was written. I wish there was some sort of purpose to everything that happened, but there really wasn’t, so I was just left feeling gross and sad.
However, I do think that’s exactly what the author was going for. Regardless, I personally didn’t enjoy it for that reason.

Lord of the Flies meets infectious parasites. True page turner and definitely a book I plan on reading again in the future.
But also.... fuck Shelley....
