the perfect read for Election Day eve. An absolute delight (trigger warning: off page death of a loved one, grief)
I love a good novel set in a day! I like how this centered around civic engagement from a youth perspective. It's easy to generalize youths as unconcerned about politics, but there are many people out there like Marva who are so passionate and dedicated about political involvement. The ending was sweet and realistic for a couple who only knew each other for one day. This is a good teen read!
In a world of political turmoil, this is a great story about two teen strangers who help each other to navigate an unreliable voting system. Both teens fight the odds stacked against them while connecting with each other and helping the community to get to the polls. The message of the story is clear and illustrates a way that teens can overcome adversity to make a differences while making friends and feeling connected to something greater than themselves.
I highly recommend this book and I will be recommending it to my students.

I don’t always like books set over the course of a single day, but this one worked really, really well. It’s all about the struggles people face in order to vote. There is a tiny bit of romantic stuff that I’m not sure the book needed, but it’s not the focus at all. Highly recommend (and I’m putting it in the hands of my kid to read next).

The book itself was fine, if a little shallow, but the audiobook was so terrible I can't bring myself to rate it higher.
Such a wonderful look at two young adults of color and their first voting experience and the challenges they face as they struggle to be able to vote. Along the way they are able to help a group of seniors get to their new polling place which is far from their homes in an effort to prevent them from voting.
Highly recommend this book first and foremost because my students loved it and we related to the plot intimately as the girls are currently working on so many issues around election justice. Importantly, this book highlights the way young people can have so much influence in their community and on systems of power - and that working towards justice doesn't end at the polls, but are a good place to start and to find love too! Tackling all the systematic oppressions of today's world, this book (and its many historically-named characters) leaves us with the hope that collectively, change is gonna come.
Well timed read of this fun, sweet story. Quick YA read.
