Obligatory comparison, given Nathanael West lived next door to F. Scott Fitzgerald, but this book is 'The Great Gatsby', except everyone is lower middle class, Gatsby is the rational one, and Doctor T. J. Eckleburg is a chicken.

Hollywood (and California for that matter) was just as awful and despairing in the 1930s as it is today.

I'd unread it if I could do such thing. This book was traumatizing, it's disturbing on so many levels- if this was Mr. West's intention, well, good job, cause this book's a big nope for me. It's a violent and raw portrait of L.A. and its inhabitants, all consumed by their hunger for fame and success, money and... power? Sort of. But not in a good way. Like, that's too alienating and it was NOT a safe read for someone struggling with anxiety.
As for the content, I'll add a MAJOR TW cause in this book you'll find:

Racism? Check. Rape? Check. Graphic content? Check. Violence (verbal, too)? Check. No amount of trigger warnings would be enough to describe this book, I swear.

So yeah, if that's your thing, kudos for you, I guess. You do you, man. But it's still a BIG NOPE for me, sorry not sorry.
