QUICK THOUGHTS:
ā€¢ I hadnā€™t heard of this author before but she is co-author for an upcoming read Iā€™m interested in, so I wanted to get an idea of her writing!
ā€¢ This book was not great not bad. I thought that the plot was unique and I felt that there was some commentary on social structure that made it bigger than just the story being told.
ā€¢ I didnā€™t really feel a connection to the main character. She was alright and discovered a lot of new things about herself along the way, which I was certainly surprised by!
ā€¢ This has an element of gender-fluid rep, as well as some other LGBT rep. I thought that this part was done particularly well and I appreciated the way it was described.
ā€¢ I read this via audio and I liked the narrator! I mainly started this because my app crashed while trying to listen to another book and just felt like I had to finish it.

Really cool & unique setting. We need more Italian mafia fantasy stories with non-binary mcs.

First impressions were as follows; The spine was an unique color compared to others on the shelf and that drew my attention. The synopsis was intriguing. I saw that Alison Goodman, author of Eon and Eona, provided a blurb which heightened my curiosity, for I adore that Duology. I also realized that The Brillaint Death is the second novel I have read from this author. The first being a disappointment: Once & Future (a co-written gender bent King Arthur retelling series with STUNNING covers).

My final impressions were as follows; The books starts out in a manner that is intriguing, easy to read, and with steady pacing. Teo, or Teodora, is inquisitive and protective over their family. Teo adores their family and delights in learning from their father.

Content Guide: nudity, sensuality, abuse

The Billiant Death has a good balance between being character driven and plot driven. The characters learned more about their pasts and their selves. The plot was steady, revealing secrets, alliances, and betrayals. The fantasy elements, magic system, and world building in The Brilliant Death is soft and understated. There are aspects of the story that could be considered dark.

Overall; The Brilliant Death was okay. I liked the ending.

This book should have been a quick read, but I just couldn't get into it. This is the second book I've read from this author and I had the same problem with it that I had with the prior book: the author's description of events are weirdly vague to the point where I didn't even realize what was happening half the time. So with that in mind I spent most of this book not being entirely sure what was going on, given how easy it was to miss important details.

adventurous challenging dark emotional slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? No

3.75

3.75 stars not quite good enough to wanna move on with a series right away. The last hour of the book was solid, but so much of the beginning was a little cringe and hard to get through.

everytime I break my YA ban it reminds me why I instituted it in the first place.
The premise was (and still is) intriguing, but the prose and characterization didn't quite do it for me.
