Who’s That Girl?
Well, almost 300 pages later and I still don’t know.

This book might be one of the most superficial memoirs I’ve ever read, which is quite disturbing considering the quality, conscious poetry Eve has given us over the years. But I mean, she literally gave us nothing with this one!! Like NOTHING, NOTHING!

With the number of celebrities she name dropped, you would think there would be a little bit of tea to sip, but nope just tap water with no ice – just lukewarm and stale.

There were so many missed opportunities for her to go deep and give us something real.

⚠️ (slight spoilers)

For example, she writes about experiencing a mental breakdown on tour but didn’t explain what drove her there or how she healed from it. It’s almost like she just wanted to acknowledge that it happened and move on.

Another example was when she talked about her fertility treatments and receiving the news that her embryos dissolved. “I had no clue that can happen,” was all she said. Well sis, neither did we, so since you wrote this book would you mind giving the reader an explanation on how it indeed happened?? Like I don’t expect her to break it down scientifically, but a little bit of something would’ve helped understand what she experienced.

Last example, “Being on The Talk was like the Hunger Games.”
How Sway?? How???? What had happened??

*sigh*

I wanted to like this book so bad, there was nothing to like. Just flat surface level stories name dropping all the popular celebrities of her era. I mean like did you really have to tell us you were in the elevator with Busta Rhymes and he didn’t speak to you? Like really?

Anyways, I like this quote:
“You become a mean girl when you’re surrounded by them”

3.5 I have always loved Eve and her music so I was excited to read this book but I was left a little disappointed. I listened to this on audiobook and I felt like Eve’s emotional connection to the book was lacking. I also felt like Eve was holding back. She would tell a some stories but not give names or any indication on who she was talking about. Not that I wanted the book to be messy I just felt like we could have gotten more. Even when she talked about her ectopic I thought she would give more like how she felt emotionally, mentally, or physically…it was like she was holding back. I respect Eve for not letting the industry turn her into this sex symbol like so many other female rappers. I also liked her honesty about how female rappers are treated and put up against each other.
medium-paced

Eve’s life during Badboy Records was crazy.

This book was pretty decent. I enjoyed her vulnerability and willingness to be honest.
