I'm invested in these characters, and I listen to the books in this series in between the non-fiction and textbooks I have to read as I work my way through a Master's in library and information science. The action in this one was very slow, with conversations that dragged on through the polite conventions of Botswana society as portrayed by the author. If you are new to the series, do not pick up this book. However, if you are considering dropping the series when this story starts to feel slow, I urge you to stick with it. The payoff is worth it.
This series is always refreshing, elegant and upbeat. In this installment, we learn that Mma Ramotswe has never taken a vacation and is totally cool with lesbians (hadn't thought about it, but it figures she's liberal on social issues). The title comes from the idea that Mma Ramotswe basks in the love of her husband, JLB Matekoni, the way a woman walks in sunshine. What a lovely notion!
This is a really interesting addition to the series. The author has caught on to something readers already did, that Mma Ramotswe can be smug, meddlesome and a bad boss, in the sense that she can't see her former assistant as she has grown--into the capable wife of a wealthy businessman, mother and more than a match for the detective agency's problems. When pushed to take a vacation, Mma Ramotswe find a child in trouble to investigate, but also undermines the agency as it operates just fine without her, to the point of nearly sabotaging a case and leaving a storm of hurt feelings with close friends. Mma Ramotswe has to grow and change with the development of her family and friends, even while holding on to the best of Botswanan traditional values.
I haven't read one of these in a long time, and this was a very good end-of-school book - pleasant and comforting as always. I enjoyed the storyline of Mma Makutsi trying to prove herself to Mma Ramotswe.
For the first time, there were some things in this book that I didn't like - some self doubts and strange comments, almost snarkiness, from our heroine. Thank goodness everything settled out in the end.
