**Pop Sugar 2023 Reading Challenge #46 (Advanced #6)- A book with a pet character**
Where the Red Ferns Grow (My Kindle Review)
“Red Ferns” tells the story of our protagonist when he was a young boy and his two coon hounds that he got with his own money. We follow his adventures with his faithful dogs as he begins hunting and they find unforgettable memories.
It’s just a wonderful story about a boy and his dogs that are always there for him as he hunts, finds himself in danger, and protect each other. Of course, it gets bittersweet in the final few chapters that will definitely make you emotional. A heartfelt and bittersweet story of man’s best friends. A (100%/Outstanding)

Not the most well-written book ever, but it reminds me of elementary school and still makes me cry!
So I'm in Tahlequah Oklahoma right now, and I hear there is a Red Fern festival next week, and I learn that it is based on this children's book from 50+ years ago. I probably read it as a child, but decided to reread to be ready for the festival!
Well, whenever I read a book featuring dogs, I just assume they'll be dead by the end.
Anyway, it's a nice story, with a lot of prayer driving the plot. That's all well and good until the family decides that God killed his dogs so the family did not have to be separated when they move to town. What the heck?

I would like to give this book a one for making me love it and then leaving me sobbing and so hurt that it took me 2 weeks to finish it, but that wouldn't be fair, so it gets a 5.
This is the most beautiful story I've ever read. I've been crying like a baby for the past half hour, listening to the heartbreaking end. I feel like I've lost two precious members of my own family. I knew how the story ended since I watched the movie as a child, but it didn't diminish the pain of reading it.
Once again I love how the classics speak freely of God and how much He helps us in this life. He was very important to the lives of people in those days, and was credited for all the miracles of life. He was who you went to in your times of need, and who you thanked for all your blessings. I need to be better at that in my own life.
I'm also amazed at Billy's strength and determination. The way he saved for two years for what he wanted seems almost unheard of for children these days. His sacrifice gave him so much joy, enriching the lives of his entire family.
I'm dying to watch the movie now to see how it compares, though I doubt no matter how good it is, it will pale in comparison to the beauty that is this book.

Before: This is the first book I remember making me cry, way back in elementary school. I don’t think I’ve read it since then. Maybe as a teenager? Anyway, I’m a little scared to read it as an adult, but here we go!
After: I really enjoyed it. Yes, I cried a little in a few parts. I didn’t particularly like the “coon hunting”, because raccoons are my favorite animal ever. But I just pretended it was some other creature lol.
