I read this with my two boys. There were ALOT of coon hunting stories (which were hard to get through some nights, coon hunting isnt normally my genre of choice). But I plowed through and ended up really liking it. We loved the pups Little Ann and Old Dan. We especially loved the Grandpa. And the ending made all the coon hunting chapters worth it.
A 4th grade reading requirement. Very enjoyable to read about a boy and his determination to make his own dreams come true. Inspirational.
Read to me aloud as a fourth grader, WTRFG was a huge cornerstone for me as a reader. As an adult, I've read it at least ten times-both as a mom as well as a teacher. It's a three hanky read for sure, as evidenced by the sniffling from the two girls whom I tutor just this morning. Two of my three sons haven't been able to escape its heartbreaking ending. No child should grow out of childhood without having read this one. I guess Sam is next!
I LOVE this book so much. My teacher first read it to us in grade 5 and it was my favourite book at the time and I am still enjoying it 5 years later,
I know it's basically English Teacher Blasphemy to not like this book. As my mother will tell you, though, I don't go to church anymore and am therefore going to hell, anyway. I don't like hunting. Lo siento mucho.
This was my favorite book when I was a kid. My fourth grade teacher read it to my class and I loved it so much that I couldn't stop talking about it. Somebody eventually bought it for me and I read it again (first book I ever re-read). I've had it on my bookshelf ever since. For the past year I've considered re-reading it, but was afraid it wouldn't be as good as an adult. I'm so glad I finally decided to read it. It was just as good as I remembered. Definitely the best dog story I've ever read (and I read a lot as a kid). I sobbed hysterically at the end--the hard to breath sort of sobs. This is by far one of my all time favorite kids' books.
One of my favorite books of all-time. The incredible love that this boy has for his dogs -- and vice versa -- is something I've always been able to relate to with my own dogs. I try to re-read this one every so often, and I bawl like a baby every time.
This was my third time reading this book. I'm giving it a 4star review based on my past memories of the book. I remember loving it. I didn't allow myself to love it this time. I read this book very cautiously. I finished it just minutes before our 5th and 6th grade book club started and I was fighting back tears and losing. Oh well! I was able to talk with a group of 5th graders and we had a good discussion.
As an adult I really LOVED Billy's Grit. Wow! I asked the students if they would work as hard as Billy did to get the money to buy his dogs. They thought they would but I wonder. I can't think of anything my own children would be willing to work that hard for. I think this book is worth reading just to see what hard work looks like. Not only did he work for two years to pay for his dogs, but he spent a lot of time training them. The story is a beautiful example of the relationship between humans and dogs. I have a dog now and it was touching to see.

The first book I ever loved. And the first book that taught me not all stories have happy ending.
