I knew I was going to rate this book three stars fifty pages in which probably killed my motivation to read as quickly as possible which is why it took approximately 2 months when it should have taken me like idk a few hours to read lol. There's nothing wrong with it but you can tell it's a debut novel. Being obviously a debut novel is NOT a bad thing okay. The story was cute. But the writing wasn't riveting. Maybe if you're more interested in Chinese mythology you might like it more than I did. Anyways, a solid read but nothing super special. I will not be reading the sequel.

I loved this book. The Chinese folklore is a nice change from Witches and fae and whatever else I am hyperfixated on right now. The writing was pretty and the little conclusions that Xingyin makes throughout the book make my heart feel nice. Loved the plot twists in between and I'm excited for the next book!

Good narration, just couldn’t keep me engaged. May try again in the future.

This book was a wonderful and magical read and god.. i know
wenzhi is like a bad guy but girll I can take him.. keep liwei. I thought that wenzhi was a phenomenal character
im looking forward to seeing how the author continues on with the story as the way she ended it could have been a single book but also like ms girlll we want to see more romance with our love interest soo..

I also would like to see more of chang’e i wonder if in the next book we’ll explore that a bit more.. and the dragons~!! I found her magic system wonderful and her story was very pretty. I also really enjoyed her characters. i thought xingyin was understandable in all her actions and reactions. like i cant necessarily relate with her but I can sympathize with her and what she goes through.

Great story! I was so happy to be taken back into an imperial world- its been a while since i’ve read a POC fantasy book.

Fantastic, evocative world building and overarching plot, but bogged down by a by-the-numbers love triangle. I absolutely loved the first third, but I was so sick of the romance by the end.
