As far as a cozy mystery goes, this book was OK. A bit long.
The big attraction is that it's Jane Austen inspired. Emma and George are characters in Austen's EMMA. Now, if you loved EMMA, this book probably has a lot more to offer, in that there's some characters and easter eggs and implied "inside jokes" (for the lack of a better term) if you're an Austen fan. Now, I've read EMMA once, long ago and don't remember the plot. So a lot of the charm is lost on me, and the only thing I have to work with is this is good story. I always enjoy having someone who is not really a detective solve the crime, such as a monk, nun, priest, basically anyone who would not ordinarily be involved in crime solving. I feel like it's a good story but it sure took a while to get there.
Thank you to netgalley for the ARC. Opinions are my own.

I really think this book just wasn’t my cup of tea, but it could totally be for other readers! If you’re looking for a regency-era murder mystery based on Jane Austen’s Emma Knightley, then look no further.
I wanted to love this book; I typically love mysteries and love historical fiction, but something about this book just wasn’t doing it for me. I found the pacing to be very slow and was having a really difficult time actually getting into the book. Some of the dialogue also just felt really drawn out. However, I think my struggle to enjoy this book was more about it not being my personal favorite and not about it not being a good book. Please still give it a try!
Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing, and Vanessa Kelly for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Lovers of Jane Austen, be sure to stay tuned for the release of Murder in Highbury on October 21, 2024!

Have you ever finished a book with beloved characters and wondered "what happens to them after the book ends? what do they do next???"
Well, Vanessa Kelly helps to answer that for beloved Jane Austen characters Emma Woodhouse and George Knightly in the first book in her new historical mystery series that has Emma solving murders in her small village in the English countryside!
This book was a delight to read and it is obvious that the author is a big fan of Jane Austen and intends for the series to be a. tribute to Jane and Emma. The characterization of Emma, George, Mr. Woodhouse, Harriett and other characters is an absolute delight and the seeds have been planted for further character arcs in future books.
The murder mystery itself was fun to follow and the clues scattered throughout the pages all made sense once the killer is revealed. Emma is perfectly positioned to be an amateur sleuth, what with being a beloved member of the village, the wife of the magistrate, and simply being a determined, feisty, curious person.
A wonderful book and I'll definitely be reading future books in the series, in addition to exploring Vanessa's backlist.

If you loved Jane Austen’s Emma and wish you’d read what happened next, this is the book for you. I felt like it stayed pretty true to the original characters, and a murder mystery is a delightful twist.

It was fine as far as mysteries went and it was kind of fun seeing the cast of Emma again, but it didn't wow me in anyway. It was just okay.
