Anyone that knows me knows that I always say "I'm not really a fan of Historical Fiction" and here we are with me LOVING this book! Amy Harmon is such an amazing story teller that I swear I will love anything she writes, any genre. I get so immersed in the story that I'm always sad to see it end. Just like her other books I will be thinking about this one for days to come.

This was SOOOO GOOD. It’s giving Mulan but make it ~Revolutionary War~. Historical fiction, women empowerment and romance. This is top 5 for me this year!!! (And I’ve read a lot of books lol)

What is she was born 100 years later. What might she have done? Deborah Samson - even the embellished parts of the novel- was a warrior, and a woman. In a time where it was incredibly hard to. E either, let alone both. Funny that in the 21st century, so much has changed, but yet remains the same. I laughed, I cried, I marveled at the true grit she displayed. I want to be more like her. But alas, “Our lots are cast from the moment we inhabit our mothers’ wombs” and the love I have suits me. I’ll end with a timeless quote from the book, penned in Deborah’s last letter to Elizabeth in 1827, but still rings true today: “it is one thing to be treasured and it is another to be a treasure. One is valued, one is possessed, and people aren’t possessions.”

3.5 stars. As seems to be the norm for me recently, this was good but not great. The first half of the book dragged a bit, but the second half (as soon as the love story came in!) was much more enjoyable.

Deborah was a fascinating, real life character. I’m glad to have learned about her.

There were a few times I felt the story was a bit forced or convenient.

I realized how little I know / remember about the Revolutionary War! This book gave me a fresh appreciation for the men and women patriots who gave our country life.

3.75⭐️This book was good! Writing is lovely. The first half was a lot of tell and not show and there was much more romance than I would have liked. But if that’s something you enjoy I highly recommend
