A funny yet concerning satire. The serious tone throughout might dare us to draw parallels with similar "modest proposals" in our political discourse

Hilarious

It was very good. Hilarious. Brilliant example of a piece of satire. Well worth the few minutes it take to read.

I read this because of Hozier and participation in an Academic Bowl. Very dense language but conveys meaning well!

I love everything to do with Ireland and it’s satire the most. Swift’s a modest proposal was a shocking, heartbreaking short story commenting on the poverty racking the island. Eye-opening and hilarious, this is a short and sweet (more bitter, let’s be real) read everyone should pick up at least once in their life.

very satirical it was interesting. in class we discussed the history behind it which made it make more sense!

What did I just read?

Fortunately, I knew going in Swift was a satirist. Might have been horrified otherwise.

I re-read this as soon as I heard Hozier recognise it as an influence for ‘Eat Your Young’. Genuinely essential reading for any Irish person.

Swift is truly the father of satire and here it is most evident. Published in 1729, it is just as relevant today and it’s message echoes through Irish history.

“I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for the landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title for the children.
