A dark and twisty take on the classic novel. Funny, surprising, and delightful. If you ever felt guilty for not loving the original then this book is one that I suggest you pick up. If you are a die-hard Austen fan then you may not like it, but I thought it was splendid, making the classic something I actually wanted to read.

I am not a huge fan of Austen or Zombies, but I was still curious because I'd heard of this book so often. So when my book club chose this as a monthly pick I was intereste. I am a little surprised at how much I truly disliked this book.

There was absolutely no consistency with the zombies and there seemed to be little consideration in how they could be elegantly integrated into Austen's work.

The concept of zombies changed throughout the book - back and forth between slow and fast moving; retaining smarts or becoming dumb; there wasn't even consistency if they were risen dead vs infected living. The attempts to merge the new text into the story felt heavy handed and slap-dash. The overuse of racist terminology was unnecessary and the original wit of Austen was completely missed. The hurried feeling of additions was actually discussed (but not fixed) by author in during the introduction included in the "Deluxe Heirloom Edition", which was published only 6 months after the first edition! (April 2009 and Oct 2009).

I would not recommend this book to an Austen lover or to a Zombie lover as it will fall short for both fan groups - unless you walk in with proper expectations.

started this in 2017, never continued and then started from scratch again in the summer of 2020. i finished it in two days but that is probably because the writing style was easy to get through. while its fun that there are twists made on jane’s works i think its one of the most disappointing books ive ever read. also elizabeth’s character got completely lost and sometimes really just acts straight out of pocket (starts to eat someone’s heart at one point?????). the movie’s enjoyable and id recommend that one over sitting down to read this book actually.
