Well written and as delightfully wicked. It starts a bit slowly but Liane is such a good writer, I didn't care. Pleasure to have character depicted in such depth and with a beautiful language and vocabulary!
I heard n an audiobook, and the narrator was excellent.

This was a really wholesome read that kept me interested despite being an 18 hour audiobook.

Sadly this book could have been 4 or 5 stars, but it was way too long. I enjoy her writing style, which is the only thing that kept me reading, but this book needed better pacing and better editing. Also, this book is considered a mystery, but I feel like it’s 90% character study and 10% mystery.

Spoilers!

I loved this book. It kept surprising me, tying up questions I had, and adding layers I wasn’t expecting. I thought the characters were really fleshed out and the dialogue was just so well done. I loved the mystery and how it kept building. This is an example of a long book that isn’t lengthy for the sake of being lengthy. It felt like each chapter was the right length too, though I might be in the minority in thinking that.

I felt a bit drawn out of the story when COVID came up. It wasn’t a dealbreaker to the story but it was like, oh. Maybe not fair as it’s just a historical event, but it definitely distracted me for a minute.

The ending at first I didn’t like at all. I don’t love some of it, especially how the Joy thing was explained so seamlessly…it almost felt like there wasn’t a bad guy in the end, which is fine I guess, but also confusing.

Joy is this kind of silly older lady, but even she wouldn’t continue to buy into Samantha’s shtick after it was revealed, right? I just didn’t believe Joy would willingly go on a 3 week adventure with someone who conned her family for months and essentially stalked them and blackmailed them. Joy may be kind of naive but she’s not idiotic. The last line though—perfect way to end the book.

DID NOT FINISH: 6%

Was really boring and I don’t want to waste my time reading something I don’t enjoy.

3.5

I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. The reveal was a massive letdown, but I loved the familial aspect of the story regardless.
