Nyx is fantastic even in short story form.

Makes me want to go back and read the Bel Dame trilogy all over again.

This world that Kameron Hurley has created is so rich and fascinating, feels so familiar and yet so foreign, populated with people you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley - but would love to be included in their "family" circle.

And then there's the bugs......

And the magicians......

And the shapeshifters...

And still it all seems so natural, because it is treated as such. No hint that any of it is supernatural. Love it.

A brief, but engaging character study of Nyx, her team, and the world they live in. I think this story might be a good introduction to the Bel Dame Apocrypha trilogy, for folks who aren't already on board.

This wasn't quite my style – too much gore, bugs, and people being unpleasant to each other – but it was still really good.  I felt the same way about The Light Brigade, I'm not into militaristic SF but I was still drawn in.  The characters were well drawn and believable.  Even the unpleasantness seemed to have a reason for it and wasn't just part of the schema for the genre.  I was also impressed that this felt like reading a novel even though it was a series of short stories spanning a few years.  I think that the only weaknesses to this was that I felt like I was supposed to be learning a backstory to a group of people I already knew about and that the backstory wasn't enough to explain why some of the people would put up with working for someone as abusive and seemingly uncaring as Nyx.  That feeling of missing something faded away by the last story, so I suspect that this would be better for people already familiar with the Bel Dame Apocrypha series, but I'm not sure that I buy the team staying together for long enough to get into whatever the main trilogy is about.  I probably won't dive into the main trilogy anytime soon, but if the first book fell into my lap then I wouldn't shy away from it and would probably keep reading the rest of them.

These are stories set between the novels. Hurley is an amazing writer. She creates a brutal world that her characters do their best to survive in. Nyx, trying to be the master of her own fate, knows all along that she is not. So well paced, such a complete and disturbing dystopia.

I love everything with Nyx in it. What a great, totally messed-up, yet still great character. And I also love her great but messed-up world. I choked up a bit when reading this, realizing some characters in it are now dead in book 2 or 3. But I also remembered how I came to love every single one of them.
A fabulous addition to the Bel Dame Apocrypha trilogy.
