When you start this series you are chomping at the bit to get to Vaughn’s story and it delivered. We love a dark knight (not just of the Cole verity) and Vaughn was just top tier.
Out of the all three books, this was the one I thought I would love the most but actually I liked it the least. Vaughnn is a complicated character so his book excited me from the start but the events, the plot it didn’t make me read this at all.
I didn’t feel their chemistry with Lenny. Honestly it felt fake.
The blood sucking part?? That was disturbing all together.
“Plus, there was a slightly deranged theory I’d been nursing privately since I was a kid—one that believed we’d had a special bond, a carnal connection, since that moment behind the fountain, sharing a stupid, half-melted chocolate bar under the pounding sun.
And Vaughn had let dozens of girls suck him off him since then.
He’d betrayed me every time he’d let someone else touch him after the day”
Lenny says here that they were something since they were 10 or sth. They saw each other like 3 times in a decade. How is it sane to feel like they betray you after you glanced each other and shared a brownie when you were both a kid and years later they got some?? ??
The scene with her tying him to bed was interesting tho I’ll have to give her that. Vaughnn says a few times that she is his equal. The only time i fet like that was true was that scene.
“You,” he whispered, kissing my cheek, “are so effortlessly yourself.”

If I have to read him call her Good Girl one more time I’m going to kill myself.

Look, it's well written. I've tried and tried with this series and somehow knew Vaugh's story was gonna be the one that stuck. I started at 8pm, finished at 2am, forgot about dinner and the world until it was done. So I can't deny it's well written and compelling enough to hook you until the very end. That being said, it's one of the worst enemies-to-lovers ever. There's nothing but abusive, toxic people who try to break each other and justify current abuse with past trauma. The sex is hot, yeah, the virginity-losing is well executed and the sexual tension well handled but it's all so tainted in so many ways I couldn't enjoy a second of it. Somehow it was okay while it lasted but left the most bitter aftertaste, which the author tries to mask with how sickenly sweet the ending is and it makes it kind of worse.
The second star is purely to recognize that I at least made it to the end.

The portrayal of the mean girls and the bullying was so unrealistic it completely drew me out of the book. There’s no rationale behind the antagonists’ vitriol and bullying, they’re incredibly one sided and it makes it unbelievable. The idea that the Vaughn is also getting oral sex in public in school from multiple girls, some at the same time, is just so ludicrous. I’m not sure how we’re supposed to fall for a guy who refuses to reciprocate. The overall story idea was interesting, but the characters are very one dimensional for a large chunk of the book and it doesn’t show the complexity of the toxic relationship in any meaningful way.
