Beautiful stories and illustrations. The entirety of “On Faerie Stories” is included in the appendix, which is a perfect way to conclude the journey that this complication takes you through.
I really enjoyed coming back to Tolkien's world,
Roverandom: 5*
My favorite of the book, it's a funny little story about a dogs' shenanigans and adventures away from home, just because he bit the trousers of a wizard... :-D
Farmer Giles Of ham: 4*
Nice story about giants, and dragons, and knights, a king, and a farmer who became a hero in a peculiar way.
The adventures of Tom Bombadil: (no rating)
Oh, how long I wanted to read this... But in the end it was a disappointment... It's only poems... (not really a fan..)
Smith of Wootton Major: 3*
An incursion on fairy-tales/land.
Leaf By Neagle: 4*
Story about a painting, that becomes something else in the end.
On an end note.. The drawings! OH the drawings!!! <3

Roverandom - 5/5 - such a cute kids story!
Farmer Giles of Ham - 4/5 - Dragons! :D Yeah!
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil - 2/5 - I really don't like poems... So I can't give more than a 2.
Also... Why call it the adventures of Tom Bombadil if more than half of the poems got nothing to do with Tom??
Smith of Wotton Major - 4/5 - Nice faery tale
Leaf by Niggle - 3/5 - hmm... It's too much like an allegory of heaven for my taste (at least it's what it seems to me).
On Fairy-Stories - -/5 - did not finish and I don't think I ever will... This lecture is boring!

This is a collection of Tolkien stories that are not usually related to Middle Earth (although they sometimes preview or lightly touch on Middle Earth). They are all quite good in standard terms, although of mixed quality by the standards of Tolkien's more well known work. Either way, they are worth a read for Tolkien fans.
(I will admit I only skimmed the essay "On Fairy-Stories". You would think that Tolkien on the topic of Faerie would be fascinating... but it very much as part of a larger contemporary conversation that I was not privy to, so I ultimately found it rather dull.)

A lovely book -- a collection of Tolkien's non-LOTR short stories and poetry, such as "Roverandom" (so cute!) and "Farmer Giles of Ham" (also fun). Tolkien's voice is very wry and amusing in these stories; it reads a little like an old-fashioned Neil Gaiman at moments.
Some of this adaptation grated in places the stories otherwise don't for me (Farmer Giles' dog, for example, is unbearable here), and in others I didn't love the story (Leaf by Niggle) and can't tell if it's adaptation or the text that I responded to – but I loved hearing Smith of Wooten Major for the first time, and hearing old familiar tales in a new way too.

He is such a gifted storyteller. These are the kind of stories you would tell children - truly spinning a tale.
Some of these are more related to Lord of the Rings and others to King Arthur. My personal favorite was the first story and I loved the usage of dogs through the first two.
There’s nothing ground-breaking about them - they’re just regular tales with morals and messages. But the way they’re told - people don’t talk like that anymore! (Or write like that)
