Things are getting tense and complicated and oh so good! I wanna dive into the next volume already!
I took a break finishing these but this is just as good as, if not better than, the first three. Joe Hill is delightfully terrifying.
I didn't enjoy the first half of this volume, but the second half more than made it up for it. I get that it's good to change things up but the style of the first chapter just put me off reading it. The last panels with bode and Zach are also very confusing when they use the ghost key, I feel like it needs an extra panel to show the ghosts to explain it fully. Criticisms aside I still think this is one of my favourite comics and its incredibly imaginative.

I can’t believe I waited this long to catch up on this series. It’s so freaking good. In this fourth volume the characters continue to grow, the storyline continues to be interesting, and the mystery continues to be revealed, key by key. While this volume started off a bit slow for me, it made it up with all that happened. The characters all see the Keys differently and it’s fascinating to see what each one would do with the different keys. If you haven’t started this series yet, it’s time to get with the program and be fascinated along with the rest of us!

Hands down my favorite, mostly of course because of Chapter 1 (what modern comic fan didn't grow up on Watterson?). The combination of newspaper-style strips laid on frequently phantasmagoric backgrounds, alternating with a style in homage to, but never desperately trying to be, Bill Watterson, and then continued into the build towards what is clearly the climax, is absolutely well done.
This overall seems like the most experimental book, and it comes at a good point.

The series is getting better, but it's taking a long time to develop a story arc that has relatively few complications and, so far, not enough of a payoff. That said, the cliffhanger does promise the next installment will go in interesting directions. Remains to be seen if Joe Hill finds enough focus to deliver.
Because that is the real issue here. Lack of focus. Hill is so fascinated by ideas and possibilities that he seems more interested in tossing them out there than choosing a handful of the more promising ones and giving them substance.

Probably my least favorite of the series- simply because of all the keys crammed into one. More of a montage volume that just moves the story forward.
So the first half of this was a 3.5 stars and the second was a 5 because holy fuck!!
