Amie Kaufman znam z jej serii Aurora, którą stworzyła razem z Jayem Kristoffem i chyba właśnie tutaj mi go brakowało.
Wg mnie ten świat przedstawiony mógłby być troszkę głębszy, ale też jesteśmy wprowadzeni w niego tak organicznie. Od samego początku nie czujemy się zagubieni. To jest świat w którym bogowie istnieją naprawdę i uczestniczą w życiu ludzi. Mamy też ciekawy system magiczny oparty o żywioły. Są to jednak duchy żywiołów, które należy przekupić i poprosić lub przekonać pochlebstwami, żeby móc korzystać z ich pomocy.
Były jednak elementy, które trochę przeszkadzały mi w czerpaniu całkowitej przyjemności z czytania tej historii. Miałam wrażenie, że jest kilka luk czy niedopracowań fabularnych. Np przez to morze płynie się dwa dni i już pierwszego dnia spotykają wrogi parostatek. A potem gdy potrzebują pomocy przez kolejne dwa nie spotykają żadnego. Inny przykład, są początki elektryczności, są żarówki, a nie ma żadnej formy komunikacji przez to morze, żadnego telefonu czy telegrafu.
Jeśli przymknąć oko na te drobne elementy, to tę książkę czyta się bardzo przyjemnie! Jest napisana ładnym językiem, a opisy są plastyczne. Relacje bohaterów, ich przeżycia, uczucia i emocje są tak prosto a jednocześnie skutecznie przedstawione, że uwierzyłam w nie, mimo iż cała fabuła trwa kilka dni. Udało mi się przywiązać do bohaterów i przeżywać razem z nimi. Amie także nie ucieka od przemocy, ale też pokazuje jak przekroczenie pewnych granic może wpłynąć na człowieka.
I właśnie dzięki temu wszystkiemu przez tekst tej książki się wręcz płynie. A sam klimat z jednej strony przypomina mi trochę Warkocz Sandersona z uwagi na delikatną bajkowość i płynność tekstu, z drugiej właśnie serię Aurora takim poszukiwaniem siebie i odkrywaniem swoich mocy.
Końcówka zwiastuje nam nadchodzącą wojnę, w której ciekawa jestem, czy ludzie będą graczami czy może jedynie pionkami w rękach bogów.

Another great read from one of my favourite authors. Loved the world building and the characters. This story drew me in and made it difficult for me to leave. Can't wait for the next book!
dnf around 30%. insanely boring. there were FIVE povs all in first person present tense. there were different narrators for each pov, and honestly, i still couldn’t tell the difference, and i had no clue what was happening because i was so bored and kept zoning out.

there is still a lot i love about YA fantasy — the banter! the fast pace! the creativity! the tropes! — but there are two things i don't like at all.
those things are:
1) what feels like a legal requirement that each one include a halfhearted, at least unnecessary and often unpleasant romance
2) the fact that each character has the ego and chosen one mentality of any given teenager. (we've all been there.)
this, unfortunately, had both. a lot of both.
and not a lot of pirates, which i thought this was about.
bummer.
bottom line: i am not the target audience for this book! but it shows.

The POVs of Selly and Leander would have sufficed for me; their dynamic with "Grumpy x Sunshine" vibes was very enjoyable, and the sweet romance that unfolds was truly a highlight of the plot.
✨ Despite a somewhat stereotypical antagonist (she got on my nerves), the exploration of complex themes such as faith and religion through the prism of divine war adds emotional depth to the story.
⚓️ I still felt like something was missing to fully immerse myself in the novel, but perhaps reading it in a disjointed manner played a role. This book remains an extremely enjoyable read, plunging us into an exhilarating maritime world where the mysteries of the oceans blend with those of the gods.

DNF for now at 45% - my library book had to be returned, and I’m not totally sold on the book but I was enjoying it enough to come back to in the future. The prologue was so awesome and I like the worldbuilding.
