It took me roughly 5 months to finish this, which is a record in slowness. The story is good, but it might be the most exhaustively written book I've ever read. I also think I had too high of expectations based on how it seems to be several people's favorite book in the series. It's 900 pages and could've easily been fit into 500 or less. Lastly, I have very mixed feelings about the epilogue, but they're all incredibly spoiler-y. If you've read it, we can talk about it.

Overall, a good read, but it felt too long and meandering to be a great addition to the series. Basically the whole thing was a side quest, and one that you kind of knew how it would turn out from the beginning. Little snippets here and there added some intrigue to the overall plot, but really didn't play a huge part. Also...that ending...

My favourite of the series so far. Stephen King, I say thankya. One of the things I've loved about this series is how it almost wantonly crosses genres. This book exemplifies that: fantasy, horror, sci-fi, mystery, suspense, crime novel and Arthurian legend all rolled into one. Inside, you'll find old western gunslingers, sassy New Yorkers, an Irish Catholic priest, vampires, undead zombies and a robot.

You'll see the homage to 'The Magnificent Seven' straight away, but it's not the only homage. The threads and overtones keep weaving through in more and more detail. The tension builds to a rip-roaring finale that won't leave you disappointed, say true.

A minor bump along the path of the Beam

i’m astonished that i read this tome in under two days…. definitely one of the fastest reads of a king book i’ve done! i have to say, i was scared of this book. mostly due to the mixed reviews and how special books 1-4 are to me. i didn’t want to be let down. i was so scared i waited almost two years after reading book 4 to finally get to this one and i’m so glad that it did not disappoint. i’m actually kicking myself for not reading this sooner.

while wolves of the calla doesn’t really move the overall arc of the story further, it does do some incredible character development and really tests the bonds of our ka-tet. king also provides some insane imaginative worldbuilding. i seriously don’t know how he continues to be so innovative with this series! excited to continue!

This book has every characteristic a great book needs. It's even better because it's the 5th book of a series: we have learned a great deal about the characters by now, and we've learned to love them, and understand them. And yet, we are to know them better in this book. That's the work of a master storyteller.
