emotional funny hopeful inspiring

Not much plot development, other than Hatsuharu being frustrated, and more Ayame + Yuki storyline. I'm getting a bit tired of Tohru - she's too much of a pollyanna, and everyone thinking she's the bees knees (and saying so all the time) is starting to get on my nerves... I mean, for someone with her backstory, I wish she'd have a more interesting personality!

This volume has yet another introduction in the form of Ritsu, who seems to be kind of divisive with Fruits Basket fans. Lots of people seem to find his personality annoying, although I mostly see it as a sign of his low self esteem. I'm never sure about how his habit of wearing dresses and kimonos is treated, although at least Tohru and Shigure don't treat it as a joke.

Otherwise this is a fairly uneventful volume again, although it does have some fun hints of characters to come, along with a bit of a tease on Rin's character beyond a vague reference or two to her before. She always appealed to my inner goth so I'm looking forward to seeing more of her again, especially with her relationship with Haru. There's also another small reference which I'm pretty sure is about another Sohma, although I might be wrong. After the last volume feeling a bit more like filler this one definitely seems like the beginning of a new story arc.

Wow! This is the best one in the series so far! It broke my heart within the first chapter, but made me laugh a lot in the following chapters.

Two more zodiac members are introduced, one directly and one indirectly. Ritsu is a funny character with a very frenetic energy. Out of the all the zodiac members, Tohru & Ritsu seemed to hit it off really quickly. They both also freak out about the same kinds of things which is kind of funny! Ritsu usually takes it to another level and so Shigure usually has to poke him in the side haha. The other reason I liked how they bonded was that Tohru gave Ritsu some advice that she came up with herself and didn't come from her mom. Usually she takes experiences/advice she got from her mom and passes it on, but this time she give some brand new advice which I really liked.
The other zodiac member in this volume is Rin. She doesn't meet Tohru and she's still very mysterious, but I'm really curious about her and everything that's happened between her and Haru. Why did she break it of between him? Why does she think she's alone? What is Akito's role in all of it?
The last interesting part in this volume is the future of the zodiac members. I'm not sure what's in store for them, but Kyo and Yuki seem to have a lot of anxiety about it. Similar to Tohru who also does though she covers it up pretty well. Kyo and Tohru have a really nice heart to heart about it and Kyo almost admits something, but it unfortunately interrupted by Shigure. But soon I know those two will get their much needed moment!

I remember when I first read this volume, I enjoyed it but didn't think it was the best. Knowing what follows this though I really think this volume is well done. The ending does hint, strongly, that something major is going to happen but it is the ... slow build throughout the volume, with the minor bumps that all get resolved relatively easily that makes what happens next so... shocking I guess.

We meet two more of the zodiac in this volume, but only one gets properly introduced. It is very interesting seeing how every zodiac member has had a difficult life in different ways and how it effects them. The way that Ritchan-san reacts to things is the way I do as well (though nowhere to that extent!!).

I think Rin is the most interesting though, there have been minor hints of her in earlier volumes and a majorish one earlier in this volume, but I think her reactions to the events the zodiac go through are the most interesting.

The best part about this volume though is definitely the set up that it provides for the next few volumes.
