This took me ages to get into, mainly because of the constant jumping between present-plot, info-dumping, and past events. Very confusing, even for a danmei.

The characters are interesting as is the story, but the writing was kind of repetitive at times, it really took me out of the story (especially every time Shen Qiao's eyesight is described with the exact same phrasing...).

Will continue reading though because a friend of mine recommended Thousand Autumns to me and I want to talk to her about it šŸ«”šŸ™šŸ»

Laughed out loud multiple times. Pretty sure whatever is wrong with me, Yan Wushi will heal it.

Features "LOL what if other people thought we were dating, but I ignore you in private?" which is a refreshing spin on the trope.

this book is a book concerned about living in accordance to Taoist principles in a corrupt power-based society. Shen Qiao, the main character, embodies Taoist principles. he is thrown into many horrible situations and it is in his response to these situations and people that his strength of character shines. this is actually very similar to tgcf's core message, but this novel goes much deeper into it. also attica's review on novelupdates sums up the strengths of this novel really well.

i loved the first half -- it was a deep exploration of taoism and the values that taoism espouses. there were a lot of emotionally charged and moving scenes, and i really felt for Shen Qiao. i loved the way he responded to things and he really shows that strength is more than just strength or being cold and hard. the second half of the book was really just lots of politics, the 'brain-injury-causing-split-personality' trope, fake deaths... i just can't... i started to skim

this was written in older Chinese and while the writing is beautiful, it is quite difficult to understand! i had to read with a dictionary. there were phrases and descriptions taken directly from the Tao Te Ching and it piqued my interest in Taoism.

But there were some people who did see through to the evil, and that insight was precisely why they refused to change--why they carried on being gentle and tenderhearted.
baby's first foray into wuxia, and honestly, i get it now. in the seven seas glossaries/cultural explanations, wuxia is usually exemplified with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which, if i've ever seen this film, i do NOT remember it) and meng xi shi delivers in terms of fight scenes. yan wushi is a cunty delight and shen qiao manages to hover on the line between lawful good and chaotic good, making him a lot more interesting that i would've assumed by the summary. he's very cassie-animorphs-coded, which is an archetype i appreciate even if i can't personally relate.

Knocked off 1 star because there are a few areas where it shows careful editing was not conducted (appendix).

Other than that though, vol 1 is a good start of the series and leaves me wanting more. I love that YWS causes problems on purpose and just stays on the sidelines as he watches the chaos ensue.

although i’m not captivated like with mxtx or tgcf im definitely intrigued enough to keep reading

i loved this one, it was philosophical at times, funny, exciting, but also heartbreaking...all the good things honestly. vol3 was probably my favourite (i read them all ofc)
