This is the first danmei novel that didn't get me. I was mostly just really bored. I am used to, and like, slow burn, political plots, and the general setup of these novels, but this one just fell flat for me.
The blurb and initial setup were really interesting. The leader of a Daoist sect, Shen Qiao, gets gravely injured in a fight and left for dead. At this time, the leader of a demonic sect, Yan Wushi, finds and rescues him. But not out of the good of his heart, because he thinks every human is essentially evil in nature, and that is what he wants to show Shen Qiao. He wants to test his faith in righteousness and ultimately lure him into demonic cultivation.
This is exactly what I was interested in, but I can't see much of it. In the beginning, they didn't even meet or talk for a long time. The actual story seems to be about some scroll with like the sickest technique on it or whatever. Everyone wants it, and then there is also historic stuff with pages and pages of lore drops about this and that master etcetera. I don't mind some more complicated lore, but this was just so much random info dumping. I guess it will be important later, but right now, I don't know what most of this has to do with the story and our main character, so I don't care.
There were also a lot of explanations about the fighting and stuff. This is certainly not a title for beginners. I've read 4 other danmei before, and I was still a bit overwhelmed with all the information, maybe because it was my first wuxia (only read xianxia before), and I have to say the fighting was also kinda boring for me.
When Yan Wushi finally showed up more, I did like the interactions between him and Shen Qiao. I still don't see how he is tempting him into demonic cultivation, but maybe this will happen later. They mostly just chill and spar, and Yan Wushi will tease Shen Qiao. That little bit of flirting was the only thing I really liked and why I will continue. Everything else I don't really care for so far cause I don't really know what is happening or like in which direction this is going 😅 Also, despite the many name drops there weren't really other characters to care about and Shen Qiao isn't the most interesting (like what even is his plan). Yan Wushi is the best character so far, but appeared way too little in the beginning.

It was a good book in my opinion with a lot of heavy politics and sects and names so for the first time it will be a bit hard to get into. After the first 100 chapter I enjoyed it so much. Every moment between Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi made me giggle and kick my feet in the air. The slow burn is crazy but so worth it. I loved the way they were with each other, the flirting was so good and the play was so fire! 100% recommend this!

It took me a little bit to get into this, but once I locked in, it was all over. Things I texted my friends about this book:
- "I love Shen Qiao being like, 'this rotten old man has incredible martial prowess and he's already the leader of a major sect. He could be a true grandmaster of demonic cultivation to rival Wei Wuxian himself...but he is SUUUUUCH an ASSHOLE being around him is TORTURE uuugggHHHH"
- "I'm pretty sure if I was a morally pure cultivator and a ruthless, hot, demonic, silver streaked hair older man told me don't you just wanna go apeshit? I would crash out."
- "Shen Qiao you are truly stronger than the heavenly pillars for not falling for this man immediately"
- "They are at an inn (always a fan) and Yan Wushi went from being all sexy-threatening to being soft and demure in front of the innkeeper (to which Shen Qiao was like can u not) and the innkeeper is like are these...homosexuals??? In my dynasty???"
