2 ⭐ as I didn't realise this was a YA book

Really interesting premise, but the plot and prose were both poor. Not enough worldbuilding or context to give the characters'  history or actions any meaning. I found the
romance plot
incredibly irksome given the subject of the book and found myself physically rolling my eyes throughout the second half

Think this book had a lot of opportunity to explore some really important themes, eg. how women/girls can often act as agents of the patriarchy, the view of the society in this book of women's femininity being a dangerous 'magic', etc. but ultimately the exploration was surface level, and instead the book hinged around
a young woman who's 'not like other girls' and who ultimately is saved BY men who either love her, or who are somehow all the 'good guys' in this incredibly backwards society.

4.5 ⭐️
I would describe this as a mix of Lord of the Flies and The Handmaid’s Tale and I ate it up. Would highly recommend.

3.5/5 i think, i'm rounding up.

So this was really good, there's SO MUCH that happens in this book. And at the end I was SOBBING. There are a few things at the end that had me feeling a little 'hmmmm, what?' I liked the general plot and the world we were put in although a lot more worldbuilding would've been nice. But considering this is a one & done, it's good.

The character development was wow. The plot was wow. I really enjoyed this.

extremely interesting premise. gripping, powerful, new. then the main character falls in love and it literally ruins the whole thing.

Wow. Wow. Wow. I was a little hesitant to start this one because I have hear SUCH mixed reviews. But, after reading 30 regency romances in a row, I needed something different.

The Grace Year is dark and haunting and mysterious truly incredible. I was so entertained and immediately recommended this one to my nerdy friends from high school, the ones who fangirled about 'Divergent' and 'delerium' and "uglies' with me.

This books really tows the line between "2010s dystopian nostalgia", lord of the flies, and something fresh. It is a GIRL POWER book, and no doubt, you will leaving this one with another strong female character you want to be.

**I'm back, several hours from posting my initial thoughts. Sometimes when you sit with a book, it becomes so incredible in your mind and sometimes you get some questions. After some reflection, I think you need to know that this books is ENTERTAINING to read but the more I think about it, the less developed the relationships, weirder the pacing, surprising things thrown in with no warning and confusing bits. I still like it after consideration, but it probably earns the mixed reviews.
