This book switches between time periods. The present day seems more real.
The sections in the past seem cloudy. And, they are more difficult to follow.
My theory is that this is purposeful. It exposes the cloudiness of memory and oral tradition while also exposing how they inform the future.

Overall, it’s well written and has a strong ending. I liked the present day (numbered) chapters better than the flashback ones. However it didn’t quite capture me so it’s hard to give more than 3 stars. I also found it odd that the main character seemingly has no friends? And she’s pretty indifferent to her husband until the very end when she’s happy to see him…
