This is a reread for me, but my first time listening to it as an audiobook. I felt like the narrator of the audiobook did a good job. I would have liked to have more differences between male characters as some tend to blend with one another, but I did enjoy the emotion she brought to Poppy’s character and thought she did a really good job with her.

I think this is just a fun and engaging book. I love the mystery surrounding the plot of where is it going to go and how are the characters going to react. The world building is a little slow, but I feel like it adds to the mystery of everything going on.

I really enjoy watching Poppy’s character grow. How she starts to form her own opinions about the world around her and how she starts to become her own person. I also really enjoy Hawk as a character, his banter and wittiness had me laughing out loud several times.

You’ll enjoy this book if you like:
•Big Character Growth
•Unique Magic System
•A play on Vampires & Warewolves
•Ancient Riddles

giving it a solid 3.5 stars bc it was literally just fantasy genre fanfiction but she was a page turner, i can’t lie

Good romantasy. For the series overall:
  • The first book is somewhat slow for plot and painful in terms of women being treated well. Keep reading! The good stuff starts in the middle of book 1. (Not as slow and painful or a start as the Plated Prisoner series or the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.)
  • Lots of steamy sex scenes, including a 3 person entanglement! Spice level is on par with other popular romantasy series (Empyrean is more detailed, Fae and Alchemy is more xxx, Plated Prisoner is more xxx & more detailed, A Court of Thorns and Roses is basically PG-14 love making except in the Cassian book).
  • This series is much stronger in giving the perspective and providing full character for her love interest compared to other popular romantasy series (matched only by the Plated Prisoner Series and ACOTAR)
  • Compared to other popular romantasy series, the plot is really slow in the later books and I think really unsatisfying. Literally, The Primal of Blood and Bone is all filler recaps except for the last quarter and then ends in an unclear and annoying way... After so many pages and books!!! Rude.

FROM BLOOD AND ASH WE SHALL RISE!!!!!

this book was phenomenal. drew me in immediately and i was completely hooked. i loved the world building, i love the writing, i ADORE the characters!!! like yes poppy U SLAY.

i will say, i fear i read too many fantasy books bc the plot where hawke was actually the dark one aka casteel was pretty obvious to me from the start…i called it from chapter 6 when poppy was talking about atlantians being able to blend in…but honestly it’s still so good. i loved how even tho i guessed it, i was able to still piece together the hints throughout the book…his heightened senses, the way he dodged so many questions, when he disappeared so quickly after the willow scene..and when the duke was killed with the cane i immediately KNEW it was “hawke” getting revenge for the way he treated poppy.

casteel is sooo sexy let’s be so fr…his funny little one liners to poppy had me choking on water constantly…

“but if you let go of the dagger, there’s a whole lot of me i’ll let your hands get close to.”

“never thought id find anything having to do with the Craven sexy. but watching you fight them is incredibly arousing.”

“you are so incredibly violent. it still turns me on”

like im sorry give this man an award or something

also..poppy and kieran arguing was giving major juliette and kenji vibes from shatter me…they will be in their bff era mark my words!!

anyways this book was a 10/10 can’t wait to keep going considering sexy not so dark one prince casteel bouta marry his princess!!!!

It was ok.

I was intrigued by Hawk in the first couple of chapters, but the characters aren’t very interesting to me. Not sure I’ll continue with the series or not.

While the world created is quite well done and fascinating. I found the storyline terrible. From the beginning I predicted the plots till the ending. Also the romance is very toxic and really messed up because it's mostly pure physical seduction and lying, not a lot of trust, emotional or kindnesses.

DID NOT FINISH: 66%

The writing was okay but I wasn't getting as into it as I wanted to be. I did try and trudged through but in the end, I just couldn't bring myself to want to finish is. The FMC also was meh.
