This is the first fantasy / sci-fi book from a Singaporean author that I've read, and I'm glad to come across this via Jacq's bookstagram channel : onechapterleft.
The Night of Legends is a fast-paced action-packed narrative, which suits an impatient reader like me very well. I definitely got Neon Genesis Evangelion X Alice in Wonderland vibes.
Some of the things I enjoyed were:
- Insanely strong heroine that's great at hand to hand combat - Keix. GO GIRL
- Witty dialogues and personalities: so much fun.
- Author had a wild imagination and wasn't afraid to use it
- Possible love triangle with two hot dudes Dace, Zej, and our heroine Keix (at least I hope so!)
- Sisterhood bond with Vin (Keix's best friend)
- Two awesome mysterious poems in the form of Ifarl legends
Some things that held me back were:
- At points I was quite as confused as Keix was about the whole situation. So who's oka? Wait how big is Atros, do they operate in just that city or country or?
- There was a character introduced briefly and then something unfortunate happens to this character almost right away - I didn't have time to get attached to this character and so the event didn't affect me emotionally.
Overall, I'm glad to have read this book and looking forward to the sequel which the author is currently working on!

Keix gets rescued from an underground facility where she’s been experimented on for the past 2 years by Atros, the very organisation she had joined to train as a soldier. Launching the rescue are her friends, Zej and Pod, as well as others who had formed a rebel organisation against Atros. Disoriented and weak from captivity, Keix has trouble believing that Atros had turned against her. But with evidence of their building a ghost army and secret experiments performed on fellow soldiers, Keix is soon convinced. With her Kulcan (a fierce race of warriors) blood inherited from her father, Keix recovers her strength quickly as she attempts to free her best friend, Vin, who had also been captured by Atros. Joining the mix are a mysterious race, the Ifarls, who possess magical powers and desire to close the portal between the living and the dead.
I’m so happy to have picked up this book by the very lovely @lesliewwrites and also to be supporting a local author. Although this is not a genre I usually read, I found myself being taken on a wild ride through this alternate universe she has created.
Set in a seemingly dystopian futuristic setting, I felt that the story could have possibly benefited from a little bit more world-building. I was brimming with questions about this alternate universe - what timeline is this in? Who governs this world? Aside from the Atros soldiers, what do other people do? What are all the different races of beings and their background?
While I love the friendship that our little band of rebels have, there is quite a bit of tension in knowing and/or deciding who to place your trust in. I was also quite fascinated by the different races of beings in this world, but so far, only the Ifarls and ghosts have made more of an appearance. Looking forward to more Kulcans!
The writing flows well and the story is fast-paced and action-packed. There were also a number of twists and turns I wasn’t expecting! As a heavy romance reader, the last bit made me very happy. The story ended in a manner that totally screams for a sequel. I’m so glad there’s one in the works. Looking forward to it! If you enjoy fantasy thrillers, do check it out! 3.75/5 ⭐️

I received an ARC in exchange for a review.
It took me a few times to finish this book - it's perfectly fine, the story is actually interesting and the imagery really intriguing, especially during the first chapter, but it struggled to keep my attention for long periods. It was perhaps a little too simplistic for me, though with a lot of acronyms and new names to try and hold at the same time.
That being said, I think it's going to be an enjoyable read to the appropriate YA audience, but unlike other works in the age group, it doesn't have as much appeal to older readers, in my opinion.

‘The key to this aim is Keix..’ I like it when the book let the readers guess the story, which side Keix belonged to, will Keix find out the truth about herself, does betrayal is the main plot point here as i have seen few of it throughout the book which totally change the relationship dynamic that Keix has with her friends, can Keix even survive in the world that is not being exactly what she was taught of or when she was forced to become a pawn for a mission that aim for the greater good? So many questions i have when i read this book. I guess thats what made me kept me flipping to the next pages as i wanted to know more. We were being introduced to Keix when she was rescued from countless ATROS’ experiment by Zej and Pod. Her memories is in shambles and she starting to feel that she cannot trust Zej and Pod despite she knew them the longest. Eventually when they managed to hide from the ATROS authorities, Pod told Keix that He and Zej worked for the rebellious organisation to take down the ATROS. This is the point that Keix felt she needed to find the truth on her own. Not that she didn’t believe Zej and Pod but she choose to trust her guts more. Along the way, she met Vin, Rold, Maii and Dace whom pledged their allegiance to the rebel organisation the same way like Pod and Zej. At the same time, Keix realised that there is something peculiar happened to her body. She’s discovering that she has new ability in resisting command and can unleash huge amount of force to fight off ghost. Granted that readers already know she belonged to Kulcan race, a warrior-like tribe but what if she is more than that? What if she is indeed the product of The Ifarl and human - the one which the legend told could not be find as if she’s indeed dead, the ghost of her will be found. I don’t really read this sort of genre hence i don’t have many references to compare it with. However, when the book dropped the reference that ATROS was divided into many sectors, it does remind me of Divergent. When the book revealed about the portal of ghosts was not being closed properly and causing the Ghost / Spectres-like creature to wander around and attack human life force, it does remind me of Dementor from Harry Potter. When the Ifarl decided to support the rebel force in taking down ATROS while insisting that they do not want to interfere at all in the first place but what ATROS had done so far will disrupt the balance, hence rectification is needed - in a way, this does remind me of Hunger Games as all the districts decided to cooperate and take down The capitol. I wouldn’t want to put everything that happened throughout the book as it will spoil those who who wanted to read it later but suffice to say, this is truly a gem. I am satisfied that it may not be my genre but the book brought so much thrill and enjoyment both in plot and characters development. I was about to give 4 stars but i felt the ending was rushed. I knew Keix survived the ordeal but i would like it to be developed a little bit more. Nevertheless, i would recommended this book for those who love young adult / fantasy / dystopian fiction / Science fiction.

This story doesn’t waste anytime in getting straight to the action.
Keix was such a badass character and I loved the relationship between Keix and Dace.
This book gave me such Hunger Games and Divergent vibes. It would make a great movie!
This isn’t a very long read so it is very fast paced and doesn’t let up. It will keep you turning the pages wanting more.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out what else happens.
Thank you to @tlcbooktours and @penguinrandomhouse for having me on the tour and for my gifted copy of the book.

What I Loved:
✨Keix (female MC) - a true warrior! She's not afraid to run towards danger. Super bad-ass combat skills! I want Keix on my side of the battlefield!
✨Side Characters (and there's a lot so pay attention) - a wide range of abilities, capabilities, and personalities. This crew forms strong bonds of friendships. A layer of sarcastic banter and a lightly-hinted love triangle lightens the heavy action.
✨Action Packed - the action starts in the first chapter and DOES NOT STOP - multiple breakouts of captivity, combat vs. humans, vs. creatures, and vs. paranormal entities! All lead to an epic conclusion with one or two remaining questions....I’m glad to see this ends in a minor cliffhanger.
For a short book (250 pages), The Night of Legends packs a punch. I've already added Book 2 - The Light Of Stars to my Goodreads “want to read” list. Support #AAPIAuthor and add this to your TBR!
