Ehhhhhh. Self-consciously quirky kid's book. Not very interesting to me.

Rereading this was such a blast from the past.

How blessed is it that the audiobook is narrated by Katherine Kellgren!!

This was a cute book! While a bit on the shallow end, the characters were fun, particularly Emma, the princess. I feel the story was a bit on the thin side, but had some adventure and humor that kids would enjoy. There is a whole series to come, so maybe some of the deeper characterizations and situations will come with the other books. I'd like to see more of the parent/princess relationship, for one. Cute book, and fun for the kids!

Very funny! I loved it!

Super cute! Sometimes I just love juvenile fiction books and this one was no exception. I even found myself chuckling a little.

I loved these books as a kid, and reading them again I can see why! This was so cute and funny and wholesome, but also action-packed and pretty smart!! I love Eadric, he’s a really well done blend of smart mouth and a good, patient friend. Emma is clever, if a bit naive, and makes friends wherever she goes! I really loved this!

My thoughts… (this was a reread of a childhood favorite)

I’m giving this book 5 stars for middle school me. I loved this book then. Did the magic of it hit me now at 23? Sadly not. 😂 Which is to be expected of course but it was even different than I remember and I forgot about 90% of the book apparently, and I didn’t quite expect this reread to go that way.
But I’ll always remember how fun and magical it was then. ✨

I’m not sure I’ll continue the series, but the thing is, I sadly never got to as a kid because my library didn’t have the 2nd book and I don’t believe I skipped ahead, but I’m not sure. So maybe in the future I’ll have to give it a go.

Alright, story time: so when I saw the summary and read the first few chapters of this book I was very unimpressed. I thought the author had copied the Disney movie (one of my favorites) and I thought it was unoriginal. PSYCH, my friend told me that the movie was inspired by the book. I looked at the copyright page and lo and behold, it had been published before the movie came out. My respect for the author went up tenfold because I realized it was a genius idea. Baker's writing is very lyrical, descriptive, something I can get lost in. The plot was good, but I knew a lot of what was going to happen because - well, we all know the story. Despite that, I found myself really enjoying the story. It was fun. But... something was off about it? The characters were fun, but I felt like it needed... more. Of something. And I didn't l Eadric. I loved Emma, I loved Grassina, I loved pretty much everyone, but not Eadric. He was just... I don't know. Something about him had me hoping she'd find someone else. And their romance just kinda popped out of nowhere. I wish it had built more. That being said, a really lovely story. Emma was fun to follow, she was quirky and strong and flawed at once, and I really liked the way she grew throughout the story. Overall a very excellent read that I enjoyed.
