I thought this was a cute, fluffy story. It definitely felt more directed at a younger audience than other children's books I have read. The dialogue felt a little choppy at times (for lack of a better word). My 8-year-old daughter saw it on the counter and is now reading it as well -- I think it is one she will enjoy.
I'm rating this from the view of how I felt about it while reading as a little girl. I absolutely loved this book growing up, and I think E.D. Baker's writing is what really got me hooked on fairy tales. Her stories are so lighthearted and fun. This isn't a book intended for adult audiences (though I certainly wouldn't want to dissuade you from trying it if you're interested), but if you have a young daughter or granddaughter or niece that likes fairy tales, introduce this to her!
I read somewhere that this was a funny, adorable, girl-empowering kid's book. I just couldn't get into it. The dialogue was really clunky and unrealistic, the scenarios were a little too convenient and it was too predictable.

Alright, story time: so when I saw the summary and read the first few chapters of this book I was very unimpressed. I thought the author had copied the Disney movie (one of my favorites) and I thought it was unoriginal. PSYCH, my friend told me that the movie was inspired by the book. I looked at the copyright page and lo and behold, it had been published before the movie came out. My respect for the author went up tenfold because I realized it was a genius idea. Baker's writing is very lyrical, descriptive, something I can get lost in. The plot was good, but I knew a lot of what was going to happen because - well, we all know the story. Despite that, I found myself really enjoying the story. It was fun. But... something was off about it? The characters were fun, but I felt like it needed... more. Of something. And I didn't l Eadric. I loved Emma, I loved Grassina, I loved pretty much everyone, but not Eadric. He was just... I don't know. Something about him had me hoping she'd find someone else. And their romance just kinda popped out of nowhere. I wish it had built more. That being said, a really lovely story. Emma was fun to follow, she was quirky and strong and flawed at once, and I really liked the way she grew throughout the story. Overall a very excellent read that I enjoyed.
