4.5 :)

I stumbled upon one of Rimmers books on audible, The Things We Cannot Say, and I was so pleasantly surprised by her ability to give the characters such emotional depth. Both this book and the last were focused in Poland during the Holocaust, and I thought reading such disturbing stories might make it harder to finish the book but the way she portrays the love, connection and perseverance in these characters made it so hard to put down. Incredibly well written

Opening in 1942, it’s the story of two families fighting to survive in Warsaw under Nazi occupation. A young and sheltered Elzbieta accidentally discovers that her friend and neighbour, Sara has been working to smuggle desperate children out of the Jewish Ghetto. She badgers Sara to allow her to help, and little by little, Elzbieta learns first hand of the horrific situation that exists behind the walls. It is here that Elzbieta meets the Gorka family who are all but starving in their struggle to survive. She forms a strong bond with their teenage son, a young firebrand who will stop at nothing to avenge the Germans for the atrocities they have committed against Warsaw Jews. A book full of strong and sympathetic characters with a heart-breaking plot where the experiences of the people of Poland both during and after WWII are laid bare. A terrific read that's very well written.

I'm giving this a 4.5. This was tough but good one to get through. Kelly Rimmer is one of my go to WWII Authors. If she writes it will buy it. This story I could not put down. I had to know what was going to happen on the next page/chapter. Please check the triggers tho. 10/10 you should read this one.

Historical fiction novel about the occupation of Warsaw and the Ghetto with the deportation and extermination of hundreds of thousands of Jewish citizens at Treblinka. As so often happens when I read one of these novels, I as astounded at the horrors humans can inflict on others. I also learn so much history that is not being taught in our schools. The author has done a great deal of research on the war and uprising in Warsaw which is shown through the story. It is loosely based on the Irena Sendler, the nurse who saved 2500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Told in alternating voices between Emilia, a Catholic girl on the outside of the Ghetto and Roman, inside the Ghetto. Their lives intersect through a nurse who works in the Ghetto.

Although I did like the story, I admit I had some reader's fatigue by the end at all Emilia and Roman endured. However, sadly, that is the realities of war.
