Good romance and historical fiction involving the suffragette movement in England in 1870.  First in the series "League of Extraordinary Women."  I think I'll read the next one.

I wasn't expecting the smut in this one - I thought it was going to be a regular historical romance with lots of longing and misunderstandings and the old our circumstances are too different trope. I mean those were there but not quite as prevalent as I’m used to.

Felt a bit long, as once I got to 63% I started to feel we were close to the finish line, but more plot points continued to happen - they weren’t bad and I understand the characters had a way to go before they’d be able to be together but the smut made things feel a bit more impractical. How much do you truly care for your reputation if you’re dry humping at a ball or asking a servant where he is while wearing a nightdress and then heading to his bedroom?

That said both our heroine and her love interest were likeable, which isn't always the case with some romance heavy books. The side characters were good too and I would've liked to have seen more of our male lead interacting with others - he really didn't seem to have much of a social life and we only really see him interacting with others as a chore or a means to an end and that never seems to improve sadly.

All that to say this is a decent read despite my misunderstanding of it. I just went in expecting something that matched the more genre typical works and ended up with something a bit spicier than I had expected. If that's what you're after though then bon appetite, you'll enjoy this.

Just very clearly her first book. The others are exponentially better.
