Such a fun read, with enjoyable characters and a fairly satisfying plot. There's nothing new here--all the usual historical romance tropes are in play, which, honestly, is part of the charm--but Dunmore gives it all a little freshness and leaves the cheesiness behind. Looking forward to the next book!

Really enjoyed this one. Loved the tension and chemistry between the duke and Annabelle and how strong Annabelle was. Definitely no damsel in distress! Also loved the women’s right movement story in the background. The narrator was amazing!

If you want a suffragette who’s deep Into The Cause. This might not be for you.

The best way I’d describe it is: a poor vicar’s daughter gets a scholarship to Oxford, sponsored by the Woman’s Suffrage Movement. She’s well educated and wants to pursue her studies of Ancient Greece. She’s thankful for the opportunity and willing to work for her keep, defend the movement, but it’s not her priority.
And I think that’s completely fine. It comes down to the fact that she has No Money. This wasn’t on the mind of other working class or poor women, because they were trying to survive. They do not have the privilege to Lose Anything through their activism. This was a benefit for women who would have had enough resources to own. She wasn’t one of them. For this specific character, Annabelle, it is completely fine for her to be grateful but have different priorities.

That being said.

It was a solid story. The writing and characterization was strong and well paced. No questions I had went unanswered. The chemistry between Annabelle and Sebastian was instant. They were attracted to one another immediately and the interest and banter flowed naturally. Not to mention how they saw one another, how Sebastian was quickly in tune with Annabelle’s needs and was always respectful to the women around him.

Reading as he fell for her unable to keep his mind away from her. It was delightful.
