I previously watched the movie Nimona when it was first released on Netflix and absolutely adored it and related to the trials of the characters much more than I was expecting. I felt that the movie was powerful, moving and had a wonderfully complex message about society and how we treat its ‘villains’. I’m overjoyed to report that the graphic novel Nimona which it is based on is, in many ways, even better. The plot is filled with twists and turns, the relationships between the main cast is darker and more intense and it has even funnier moment than in the film. Both the graphic novel and its film adaptation are wonderful, it truly show a story from all sides and tells a tale that anyone who has been made to feel like an outcast and a ‘villain’ can connect with. A must read!

I had to re-read this after the Netflix movie came out (which is also ⚡️METAL⚡️ as hell), and it still holds up. Art is kinetic and fluid, the story is somehow simultaneously goofy and emotive and poignant and the characterisation is on point. Sure, the pacing can be odd, but such are webcomics. ND Stevenson, well done dude you cooked with this one.

Usually I like books much better than the movie…but in this case, while I like the messages from the book and that it inspired an amazing movie, the graphic novel is much darker and serious. And quite a bit more violent. They did much more character development in the movie and built on Nimona and Ballister’s relationship more. The ending of the book is a little choppy and I had to re-read it to understand what happened. The message about not getting “stuck” or not needing to be “saved” were clear in the book, and I liked that they built on that in the movie and gave Nimona a strong voice. The artwork was cool. I liked that she keeps changing her hair :-)

The film is my favorite film of all time, and this was a great graphic novel. It's sadder and more anarchist than the film. A fantastic quick read.
