Read for book club!
I am usually very bad at guessing who did the crimes in mysteries, but this time I got it immediately because I knew the story of Gene Tierney.

I do love Miss Marple. I've always been an Agatha Christie fan and have read many of her books but the Appointment With Agatha reading group has allowed me to re-read some favourites but even more exciting, has introduced me to new favourites by this author.
While this one isn't a perfect read as I found the mystery became obvious before the big Miss Marple reveal and there were a few too many coincidences, I can't help but enjoy a Miss Marple mystery. She is recovering from illness in this one so isn't flitting around the village as quickly as she used to, however, she (as always) makes her presence felt. Mrs. Bantry ('The Body in the Library') returns and is used early in the book as Miss Marple's eyes and ears. I enjoy the scenes where the two of them are sitting in Miss Marple's parlour working through murder suspects and motives.
I also enjoyed Miss Marple's observations of the changes that the village is undergoing. This book was written in 1962 and it appears from the descriptions, that the story is meant to take place around the same time. Miss Marple describes how village houses are now being outnumbered by The Development (what we would call subdivisions today) and how the local markets are being overtaken by stores where you actually have to walk up and down big aisles and do your shopping yourself. The real conclusion that Miss Marple comes to however is that regardless of these changes, people's behaviour and tendencies remain the same.
A very solid entry in the series!

Although I don't quite buy the motive(s), I like the characters in this one quite a bit. Miss Marple is always a delight. I've been reading through Christie's novels for several years and have been reading English lit for decades, and this is the first time I really realized that, unlike with novels set in the US in which I can follow the action on a fairly detailed mental map, I have only the vaguest sense of the geography of UK-set novels.
