Poor Miss Marple! Practically confined to her house and hovered over by a well-meaning but aggravatingly overbearting live-in "nurse" when there is murder afoot! Being Miss Marple, though, such a trifle does not get in the way of her keen mind or astute observations. It also helps that young Craddock knows to bring information to the feet of his wise Aunt Jane and Dolly Bantry was Johnny On The Spot for this mystery. A wonderful story with lots of suspects and plenty of red herrings and some aggravating personalities. It kept me guessing and I am not ashamed in the least to say I did not see the end coming until Miss Marple laid it out so neatly. I honestly thought it was going to be something else! This book also had one of the more heartbreaking side casualties in the end. While Christie did not dwell on him, her expert touch made me ache for him and his future suffering.
I think Miss Marple did, too. She was almost Wimsey-ian in her final words and what she hinted/held back.

You definitely see Miss Marple aging further in this one. I'm loving that thread throughout this series. The twist and the reveal weren't expected AT ALL and they hit me hard. So far this might be my favorite.

I knew this story having watched the TV dramatisation with Julia Mackenzie as Miss Marple and Caroline Quentin as the unfortunate Heather Badcock. I also think I may have seen the film version with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis and Angela Landsbury! Anyway I was convinced I knew who the murderer was until I started listening and then I wasn’t so sure because of all those dogdey characters and red herrings! Agatha Christie certainly knew how to make me doubt myself and put me of the scent. When the big reveal came I was right, phew! A very good mystery read perfectly by Emilia Fox!

God this one is SAD 😭 but really really brilliant.
Moderate: Mental illness, Grief, Murder, Gaslighting, Abandonment
Predictable line, but somehow I feel like that is why it’s amusing. Some deaths are completely unnecessary. Or could be necessary if they had better explanation. An “okay but not great” one.
