I tried to like this book; I really did! I just kept reading in the hopes it got better however, for me it never did.

The main character; I'll use the name Alex which is the name she goes by for most of the book; is a chemist who tortures information out of people for the government. She ends up torturing the wrong guy (Daniel). When Daniel recovers from this horrible torture, he falls in love with her. Yeah, like that would happen. The bulk of this 500 page book is about this boring relationship. I kept hoping Alex would get together with Daniel's twin brother instead because I thought they'd be more exciting to read about. That did not happen unfortunately.

I ended up skimming the last 2 chapters just to be done with this tortuous book. And Meyer could have just left the epilogue out of it altogether. The only reason I read this book so fast was because it was a library loan and I needed to turn it in so I wanted to finish it. I hope everyone else enjoys this book more than I did.

I really liked the characters, especially all the dogs. I thought the story was intriguing and suspenseful and, at first, I wanted to keep reading until I finished it to see how it would end. None of my predictions came true, which is a little disappointing, but at least I didn't see "it" coming. I'm not sure if having surgery (and being doped up) in the middle of my read tainted my experience, but I did think it was a little too long and a bit anticlimactic. I just wanted the last 100 pages to be over with so I could get it off my plate.

Let me tell you a story.

I bought this book 3 times. I would start it and stop because I didnt feel like I knew what was going on. I wouldnt even remember that I owned it.

Finally, i was bound and determined to finish the book. I was at about page 80 and I went on goodreads and someone ( lots of someones) said to listen to it on audio. I did.
Omg, omg it was amazing. Finally, the audio was to slow for me and I went back to the book. I loved it.

So long story short, dont give up if your reading the physical book version. I promise the payoff is amazing.

If your wondering why I didnt give up in the book, I just happen to love the authors other books so I kept going.

So glad I did.

I'm disappointed I couldn't finish this before the new year, but what can you do right?

This book wasn't terrible, but it wasn't necessarily my favorite thing in the world.

We've got a cool scientist turned interrogator turned double crossed agent as our heroine. And there was so much room to dive into all of that. However, I felt that this book fell flat. I was so excited to learn about a character who used science for the CIA, instead I was met with science name dropping that felt incredibly insincere. Even though Meyer had consultants for this piece, it felt as if she had watched CSI and bsed it from there.

Similarly, the plot went into a lull in the middle of the book. They were running and hiding, but it wasn't very clear what they were running from or why they were running. We got a forced romance scene, which really wasn't necessary, and an obnoxious amount of doggy love. We get it, you love dogs.

The ending was also a let down. Many things felt too convenient about this book, and the ending made the top of the convenience list. Only one thing really seemed to be an obstacle, but it all worked out! Yay!! Happy happy!

Perhaps I didn't enjoy this as I initially said. I'll sit on it a while and see if I can come up with anything that makes me definitively hate or definitively love this book. For now it's in between.
