I enjoyed the plot, but the dialogue was pretty unrealistic - it just is not how teenagers talk. It felt a little corny/cheesy.
Completely predictable plot and totally unlikeable characters.
*Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.* The book starts with the knowledge that someone has been killed at Odell Academy, but the reader does not find out the victim until well into the book. This was a clever idea as it allowed for lots of foreshadowing throughout the novel. The protagonists are recently orphaned twins, Bel and Rose Enright whose grandmother has shipped them off to the same boarding school that their father attended, prestigious Odell Academy. The girls are put in Moreland Hall, a dormitory known for its troublemakers. Rose throws herself into the academic and co-curricular life of the school, whereas Bel falls in with the 'wrong' crowd.
One reviewer described this book as a cross-between 'Mean Girls' and 'Cruel Intentions' and I can't quite feel it is apt. My rating would be between 3.5 to 4 stars. 4 stars because it is compulsively readable. I wanted to know who was killed and by whom and why and was very engaged in the plot. 3.5 stars because the book did rely on a number of tried and true plot devices - twins that are radically different, a student developing a crush on an older man, a seemingly perfect family where not all is as it seems, snobby boarding school students and so on. Overall, an enjoyable read however.

Rose and Bel are recently orphaned twins who are forced to leave their Bohemian California life and attend prestigious Odell Boarding School in New England. The sisters very different and each handle their new start in opposite ways. Sarah and Heath Donovan are Odell Alum's returning to run Morehead Dorm in hopes of their own new start and looking to clean up the infamous dorm. When the twins move into Morehead, trouble only begins to increase for Odell and the Donovan's. But when one twin ends up dead, the boarding school runs rampant with rumors and pranks are exposed for more than what they seem.
I found the beginning 1/2 really engaging and fast paced. I was not sure where the story line was headed. It then started to slow down for me and the characters became frustrating. Sarah who started off strong became a weaker version of her earlier self. I really wanted to root for the main characters but after mistake after mistake. and blindly following and believing whatever they were told, I became less engaged and invested in the story. I think if you didn't read a lot of thrillers one would really like it. Overall 3 stars.

A more interesting book would have killed the other twin.

I won this as an ARC. It was really good! Good plot, great suspense, decent bit of creepy. I will read more from this author. There were a fair amount of editing errors, but all in all, I wasn't too bothered by that.
4 intriguing and scandalous stars to She Was the Quiet One! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Somehow there is always a fascinating story to be told about a boarding school, and She Was the Quiet One is set at The Odell School in New Hampshire.
Rose and Bel Enright are twins who have recently lost their parents. They are enrolling at Odell, and soon after, they develop a fierce rivalry. One sister is known for her beauty, while for the other it is her intelligence. At the same time, the students of Odell are living a life without rules or boundaries, and their collective disorderly actions are swelling towards tragedy.
Sarah Donovan is the wife of Heath, a teacher at the school. Her husband is power-hungry and sees Odell as an opportunity to climb a ladder and gain fame. Reluctantly, Heath also has his doubts about Sarah. Gossip spread as the students make a bet involving Heath, and Sarah wonders if she ever knew her husband and of what he is capable.
The scandals reach a fever pitch when someone is murdered, and of course, there is a long list of suspects.
She Was the Quiet One is not a twisty-turny book. Its flavor is in the suspense of analyzing the scandal and watching it unfurl. Michele Campbell’s taut writing style compelled me to read from start to finish, and I found the epilogue to be a juicy little twist at the end.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the complimentary copy. All opinions are my own. She Was the Quiet One will be published on July 31, 2018.
