Very heavy on Victorian manners, romance, and the old "double standard" but I like Inspector Pitt and Charlotte so will continue with the series.

Very enjoyable read. Highly inaccurate as far as Victorian social history, but a nice, silly romp.

I enjoyed the mystery but the ending was too abrupt. Wanted more closure.

Perry's novel The Cater Street Hangman clearly illustrates the class system of Victorian England as well as the dual standards for men and women. It is fascinating to see how Inspector Pitt needs to look beyond what he is told because of his inferior station while trying to question a family above his social standing. The rich details of the Victorian world are tangible in the descriptions of clothing, the behavior of the titled, and even how good people speak to their servants, and the position of the clergy in society.

After finally learning Anne Perry's true identity I needed to read one of her first books. I have to admit I enjoyed it. I am curious to read one of her newer titles now. I'd like to see if her 'voice' has changed at all with age or if this is a style and time period that she has stuck with all these years.

It seemed very promising for the first 100 or so pages, but it tended to drag a bit after that and didn't fulfill that promise. It was mostly enjoyable, though, and the ending was gripping.

I wanted to see if I liked Anne Perry's Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series, so I borrowed the first one to find out. I have a good report! I enjoyed the book, but I thought the ending was too abrupt. I'll probably read some more of her books this summer. I might have found myself a new series. The snobbery of the Ellison family is rather appalling though. It's a little hard for me to understand. I'm not sure of Victorian families of means were really that bad. I hope not.
