3.5/5 rounded up. I enjoyed my experience reading the book overall, but it really was only okay. The writing was solid, plenty of characters, and a lot of relationships making the “world” feel full.

Quick hits:
- Not much mystery, more character focused with little plot.
- Too many perspective changes, I didn’t really care about what certain characters were thinking.
- A lot of drama which is tangentially related to the crime at best.
- Charlotte and Thomas were fun to watch interact and what I looked forward to the most.
- I wish Pitt was there more frequently.

If you’re interested in more of a period drama with the lightest hint of mystery, I’d recommend. But it’s completely in the background compared to the entirety of Charlotte’s family.

It is casually racist, and my god it is so boring.

in the immortal words of my husband, this was good not great. The portrayal of proper ladies & crime fighting in Victorian times is fascinating, but there's too much character development and not enough plot.

This was wonderful for what it was--a historical mystery. It's not great literature, but it's lots of fun, and a good page-turner, and I cared very much about the characters. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. (Thanks, Kristen!)
