3.5! I wish more the the problematic scenes had been addressed by the characters, but overall I’m just happy to have had my mind opened to another type of dysfunctional family.
they were all childish as but i guess we'll give it a pass bc theyre children... also everyone here is ANNOYING AND RACIST. i think this was trying to make a point about race but it was so stupidly done.. as in the characters were just yelling stereotypes back and forth it’s getting weird!

A coming of age novel that is sweet and wonderful.
Biggest warning is that it will backhand you with homophobia/racism without warning. You’ll feel very safe as a reader and then get whiplash as things are suddenly said or done and it’s pretty abrupt.
Otherwise, this is a cute book, there’s such a niche interest of poetry going on here that I really really loved. Sana was such a messy teen protagonist, and I really enjoyed watching her stumble and catch herself as she learned and grew.

fantastic first half, but the last quarter definitely brings it down a bit.
I loved the realness and messiness of the story. It was frustrating and Sana made me want to pull my hair out at times, but I loved the growth of her and of the other characters throughout the book.
I picked this up because it was sapphic and put it down because it was YA and I just wasn’t in the mood for high school struggles.
this was a very cute story. i want to say it's lighthearted but it delves pretty deep into how different environments can shape racism as well as how it can vary from one person to another. the family dynamic was interesting--it's definitely not something i expected, but i can see how it makes sense and it's a little bittersweet. sana went through a lot of growth--from trying to fit in with the white crowd in the midwest to finding her group and girl in the pacific west which opened up the prejudices she didn't think she had growing up as the rare POC in wisconsin and then trying to change that POV through even more messes.
her friends were pretty realistic, i think. i grew up in a pretty strict household and, honestly, sana's home dynamics was pretty lenient for me. i think i related more to hanh in how strict my parents were--of course, i didn't jump through hoops to do things like that. (i did however lie very much about the presence of boys being somewhere.)
the romance between jamie and sana was cute. not my favorite and not that strong, but it was still nice. it was a sweet thing she did at the end, but it also doesn't justify why she had to do it.
basically this story was v complex and, as per usual, i am incapable of telling my opinion in a coherent and organized manner. anyways, the cover is really cute!!!!!!!
