God I hate when it’s a duet and there’s no indication there won’t be a HEA until the last three pages. It makes absolutely no sense. Particularly with these two.

Sometimes it’s all about the timing, with her usual style and flair Lauren Blakely has given us a emotional story of two men who weren’t looking for anything and then stumbled into something.

Baseball is Grant’s life, and now with an opportunity to play in the big leagues everything seems to be falling into place, what he wasn’t prepared for was to be playing with someone who under any other circumstances would be perfect for him.

Take this journey through the beginning of Grant and Declan’s relationship, see where it started and how it progresses. But don’t look for a HEA at the end of this book as it’s part one of a two part series, so there is a cliffhanger of sorts. Don’t fret though because part two will be here in August, and that’s not too far away!

Lauren Blakely writes with her heart and you can feel it whenever you read one of her books. Do not miss out on this one!

This review is for both Scoring and Winning With Him.

WOW! This series was scorching hot! Lauren Blakely really knows how to write a MM romance. It was so hard not to fall in love with these two sexy, openly gay baseball players. I did enjoy that it was written as if we are in a world that accepts openly gay athletes. They weren’t hiding their relationship because they were gay, but because they were teammates, and they wanted Grant to establish himself before being in a high profile relationship. This was a very sweet but steamy story with a virgin and a little bit of forbidden romance.

Grant and Declan both have the mindset of staying away from relationships and focusing on baseball. But their attraction quickly turns from just physical to real feelings. Their connection is so strong but they have to tell themselves their relationship has an end date. Things really heat up with the time they do have together. Grant has sex for the first time and their chemistry is no joke. Very spicy! I loved their relationship in and out of the bedroom and can only imagine how much better it would have been if they didn’t have to hide.

In the second book they spend more time apart: physically and emotionally. This one was a bit harder on my heart and pulled at all of my emotions. I was rooting for them to figure out how to be together. Declan has been traded to New York while Grant begins his rookie season. They are both heartbroken being apart but they immerse themselves in the game of baseball. They give the game their all and ignore the pain they feel. In the years that pass by throughout this book, Declan mostly has to deal with problems with his father while Grant becomes a huge star and makes a name for himself. I do wish we got to see Declan have that kind of success in his career but I was so happy for all the awards Grant won and winning the World Series.

While most of their time was spent apart over the last 5 years, every once in a while they did have an interaction and it proved that their love and the connection they shared is still strong and will never die. Their love story was perfect, even with the flaws it was exactly as it needed to be for them.

It’s hard for me to really love a book when the story kind of cuts off and continues in a subsequent book, which is why I waited until I finished the second book to rate this one.
SPOILER FOR THE SECOND BOOK:
at the end of the second book, Grant says “We have two love stories. Our first was young, wild love—sexual love. We still have that last part down pat. But we also have so much more. A love that runs deep, a love that steadies and centers us. In our second love story, we have this real life. This real love. This home we share.” I think I needed to finish that second one to fully appreciate the first!

This book is very interesting. I love Declan and Grant together. All the side characters play their roles perfectly and I love the baseball theme. The love they have for each other is perfect and the plot is very deep and emotional. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!!
