Jumping between past and present storylines, I found this to be a decent thriller - I didn't see the twist coming at the end and I read the last few chapters really quickly but I didn't really like any of the characters so I found the middle of the book hard to get through. It also just bugged me that there wasn't really a resolution with the neighbour guy.

The Spires by Kate Moretti
Narrated by Siiri Scott
“There were many different kinds of prisons, she knew. And sometimes the ones you made yourself could be the most brutal of all.”

Synopsis: After graduating college, Penelope and her best friends - self proclaimed The Spires - moved into an abandoned church to continue to party and be young together, until tragedy struck. Years later, the entire crew has lost touch, and Penelope struggles in her current life. When one of the spires shows up at her front door, looking for a place to stay, a Pandora’s box opens and threatens to spill all the secrets from that fateful night years ago.

Let me start off by saying that I really love Kate Morettis style of writing and the way she helps a story unfold. I loved it in The Girls of Brakenhill, and I loved it in The Spires. I was thoroughly invested from beginning to end, mostly thanks to the authors talents.

However, let me ask you this: Have you ever loved the way a story was written, but not really loved the story itself?

With this one, that’s exactly how I felt. I kept listening because I loved the way the story flowed, but I had some issues with the characters themselves, especially Penelope. She felt massively hypocritical to me, and while I know all characters shouldn’t be perfect, I had a hard time with the way she handled certain things. Also, I had a problem with the big reveal. I don’t want to spoil anything, and obviously as a thriller reader I should be used to far fetched twists, but this one felt WAY too far fetched for my taste.

The narration by Siiri Scott was wonderful, so kudos to her. If you liked Ashley Windstead’s In My Dreams I Hold a Knife, then The Spires could be a great way to get a similar feel. All in all, I’d give The Spires a 7/10 bubble baths!📚🛁

Predictable and driven by characters that were wafer-thin.

The book was fine, the writing was fine, nice plot twists, but I couldn't stand any of the characters. It was hard to believe they had this great or memorable friendship when the basis was constantly this sort of witty and spiky competition and underlying simmering resentment.

There was, unfortunately, nothing special or unique about this thriller. However, it was entertaining. It could have been more suspenseful but was lacking on the page-turning suspense. The ending was interesting, but neither predictable nor shocking.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book! It was my first by this author and won't be the last. I really enjoyed the mystery and had no idea what the final twist was going to be. I found myself slightly frustrated and impatient with the back and forth timelines though, and I felt it made the story drag a little bit. All in all 4 stars!

A story told then and now - about a group of students who move into an old church to keep their family-like friendship together past college … until the church burns down and a life is lost. Now someone is out for revenge.
