What a weird read. So well-plotted with not a single interesting or likable character.

I think I'm honestly just getting burned out on thrillers. This book felt just so long, plot didn't feel believable, and the twist was just kind of ridiculous. If I read this 3 years ago maybe I would've loved it but now it has so many things that I've already read about and tropes that just no longer work for me.

After college the group of children/adults (Jack, Penelope (Pip), Willa, Bree, and Flynn) decide on a gap year at a place that has fallen into their laps. A redone church that is cheap and they christen themselves the Spires. The next year is wonderful with them connecting and friendships blossoming and developing silent languages and looks that no outsider could understand. Until someone brings in a sixth. A sixth who doesn't quite fit in with the five who have developed such a bond. Fast forward 20 years later and Penelope opens her door to find Willa standing there asking for a place to stay to get away from an abusive husband. Penelope, the sensible one, can't say no. But things start happening. Things reminding her of the fire 20 years ago. Things that seem to make it look like Penelope is losing her mind. What is Willa's game. Nobody believes Penelope and she is on a quest. Quite a good book that kept me guessing and was very satisfying. I like it a lot and would recommend it.

✨ The Title/Cover Draw:
I really liked The Girls of Brackenhill so when this book popped up, I grabbed it. Thank you to @netgalley (and the publisher) for allowing me to read this book ahead of publication.

I read [b:The Vanishing Year|27274370|The Vanishing Year|Kate Moretti|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1473600596l/27274370._SY75_.jpg|47328200] by Kate Moretti and really enjoyed it, she's definitely knocked it out of the park with "The Spires" as well. I loved how this book kept you questioning everything , even back and forth at some points. The way the story is paced makes the pages turn themselves and this book was un-put-downable.

Moretti's understanding of the human psyche are what makes her stories so incredible to me. Not only does she create incredibly relatable characters but she writes in a way that makes it easy to imagine yourself as the characters. Every breakdown, every heartache, every horrible, gut-wrenching moment feels like it's happening to you. The only reason I didn't five star this one was because the ending went a little too out there for me. It was a bit too far fetched, as they say, and I think that's why the reveal surprised me. Nonetheless, I would recommend this read.

With many thanks to Netgalley, Kate Moretti and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC.
