“Grief is a silent assassin, lurking in the dark of one’s soul, ready to cloak any light in shadow.”

Beauty and the Beast
is one of my favorite fairy tales. So, I'm always looking for retellings of this fairy tale. However, I can seem to find one retelling that I truly love.  A Court of Thorns and Roses was marked as a  Beauty and the Beast retelling but I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how that trainwreck of a book is a retelling. So I was a little reticent when I discover this book. But I decided to read it!

I really liked this book. It is not what I expected from a retelling, but it is a solid book. As a retelling, I think that it falls a little too short (but, at least, it can be considered as a retelling). As a story, it is a solid and well-developed story. The characters are interesting and well-written. The plot twists happen at the right time and are completely unexpected.

Overall, it's a solid story that I recommend if you're looking for retellings that can be their own story.

Synopsis:
Jak has been raised with one mission: to kill the creature and restore magic to his coven. But when he’s finally meets the creature, his mission becomes less clear. His heart gets involved. Will he be able to kill the being he’s falling for? Or will he suffer the same fate as every claim before him?

Review:
This was a wild ride. The more I learned about the creature aka Marius, the more I wanted to dive deeper into this world. Both Jak and Marius are complex characters and enjoyed getting into their relationship more. Through the library scenes, I wanted to learn more about past claims and their stories. The story picked up tremendously at the climax and end. It kept me so engaged. The twist at the end. Not to spoil anything, but I love the “you done f*cked up and now you bout to get it” ending. My one critique is that I thought this would be way more smutty that it is, but still a solid recommend!

The story had potential but the writing was lacking and felt super clunky at times. I was entertained enough to finish it but I think it really needed another couple rounds of editing.

Dark, mysterious queer slow-burn romance. Addresses generational trauma and is definitely steamy.
