I've read this at some point in September. I've read two more books from this series, but this is the only one that I'd actually liked. I wasn't planning on logging either of those three books because they're all very short, but V gave me this book before we'd left Belgium and I want to have it saved here.

As far as I remember, the stories were macabre and I liked the most of them.

The greatest difficulty was to find a way of disguising the hyena’s face. We spent hours and hours looking for a way, but she always rejected my suggestions. At last she said, ‘I think I’ve found the answer. Have you got a maid?’
‘Yes,’ I said, puzzled.
‘There you are then. Ring for your maid, and when she comes in we’ll pounce upon her and tear off her face. I’ll wear her face tonight instead of mine.’
‘It’s not practical,’ I said. ‘She’ll probably die if she hasn’t got a face. Somebody will certainly find the corpse, and we’ll be put in prison.’ [16–7]

This is a collection of really weird stories and I actually enjoyed them more than I thought I would!!

I loved the story ‘white rabbits’ because it was just so creepy and weird, and ‘the debutante’ too because it was just dark and strange. The rest were just weird, with not enough darkness for me. I’ve not read a lot of surrealist fiction, but I’ve looked a little at surrealist prose poetry and my conclusion is that it’s basically all the same and is probably a matter of personal taste, I just wish it was all a little consistently darker

People said that this book was funny. Well the humour was lost on me.
