Reading Jeff VanderMeer is like stumbling in a haze down an unfamiliar path. You are exposed to many things that defy common understanding and comprehension. Yet VanderMeer challenges you to accept what you cannot fathom.

All the feels. A quiet story with startling depth about the end of the world and what it means to be a person. Minus a star for the prose, simply because I never quite got used to it, and even as it helped give the book it's own unique feel, I found myself re-reading sentences to find that my first read through was incorrect. But I ѓќ?‹?Џ Borne and I teared up at the end - a sign of a great story.

3.5 really. I loved lots of different parts of this book. At first, it was the descriptive language that really drew me in. VanderMeer described the landscape and the sci-fi scenes in such a way that made it really easy to develop an image in my head. Later in the book I found it harder, and I couldn't be sure if the language got more poetic, or I had less patience. I enjoyed the twist, even though so much of it was insinuated in the beginning, VanderMeer still kept some things hidden.
