A little background is needed for this review. Watsky was one of the first artists that my now wife played for me. His music has continued to be some of my favorite nearly a decade later, with his self titled album and “Cardboard Castles” are a nostalgic happy place for me and “All You Can Do” is one of the most personal albums I’ve listened to. So when I got a chance to read about his life I was excited to say the least.

In a series of short essays George Watsky takes you through a few adventures and hard times. He speaks very openly about the struggles of having epilepsy as a kid and an adult. He catalogs his difficulties with his desire to date an older woman. He even goes over how Hip-Hop almost got him kicked out of school. Being able to see behind the curtain into the influences of the artist that I grew up listening to was just as wonderful as I had hoped it would be. I can’t say much else about the book as I think how he tells the stories are part of the fun of reading.

Final Thoughts: If you are a fan, read it. If not I would still pick it up as hearing his stories can impart a bit of wisdom.

I am a huge George Watsky fan. From his slam poetry to his music, I love it all. And this book was no exception. It was funny and thoughtful and smart. A superb collection.

Laughed out loud during the first 3 short stories but lost steam in the middle. It ended strong with the last 2 essays.

Although some essays were definitely better than others, I found the book pretty good for a casual read. Watsky injects humor into the pages quite skillfully, and the majority of his anecdotes were entertaining. I'd say the essays could use more emotional depth or inspirational ideas to be truly exceptional.
