This series is really cute and I definitely needed the break right about now. (: (: (:

Potentially a more interesting story than the first one, and yet it didn't quite work for me. But I'd say it's definitely worth reading if you liked the previous book. And I will likely read the third book.

3.5

Picking up shortly after the events on the first book, Connwaer finds himself with a locus magicalus and the other wizards, aside from Nevery, not only are not letting him continue his studies but actively blame him for "losing" his stone in the first place.

He's also still hounded by Kerrn, the queen, and various others, despite having saved the city.

But Conn, being a non-nonsense sort of kid, pursues the study of pyrotechnics in order to communicate with the magic, because he knows it wants something from him. Unfortunately, such studies are forbidden and, well, no one believe him about the magic anyway.

One thing I really like about Conn is that he's very sure of his own mind. He knows what needs to be done and he does it, despite the costs, and he does this without coming across as just arrogant or a know-it-all. Unfortunately, he doesn't really articulate to other people what he needs to do, he sort of just does it, which causes all sorts of additional problems.

In fairness, though, most people don't want to listen to what he has to say, anyway. Rather annoying, that. I tend to get irritated with kids books where all of the adults are stupid. Luckily, this book circumvents this book for the most part with Nevery and Benet - who remains a solid and unperturbable presense.

Anyway -

Conn is sent to Desh to find out what's going on and lands himself a good bit of trouble - making some new allies and enemies along the way. But, as ever, Connwaer persists and, despite the odds and the costs, does what needs to be done.

It's a short, quick book - I read it in one sitting. Unfortunately, it ends in something of a cliffhanger, and I'm anxiously awaiting my next trip to the library so I can pick up the final portion of this fun little trilogy.

A highly enjoyable continuation of the events of the first book, expanding the cast of characters, the scope of the world, and the complexity of the plot.

Some of my favorite bits:

Conn and his understated personality. He keeps so much inside, but there's just enough insight that I felt for him greatly, particularly at a certain point midway through when some very bad things happen, and at the end. There was one paragraph at the end that just got me in the heart, because the whole book had (at least in my mind) built up to it. I love that!

Rowan. I enjoyed getting to see more of her and (because I am a romantic sap) I am already eagerly anticipating how the relationship between she and Conn will develop in future books as she and Conn get a little older. Especially with Argent in the mix (I was very glad to see Rowan already putting Argent in his place though, heh).

The underlying mystery. I'm intrigued by the way magic seems to work in this series and particularly Conn's relationship to the magic of Wellmet and the various animals that are associated with the magics. I am looking forward to learning more about what is really going on in book 3. Also, the dragons!

Entertaining

Very fun. Good sequel picks up where the first one left off. Minor characters in the first one play new major roles in this one. No ending though, needs the next book in the series.

Good sequel to [b:The Magic Thief|1809175|The Magic Thief (Magic Thief, #1)|Sarah Prineas|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348418598s/1809175.jpg|1808499]. Cute and fun. All the characters are great.
